I Give You The Head Start Trend Following Advantage

A recent email exchange:

Michael, How well does your system perform? What is the rate if wins over losses? What is the largest gain and largest loss on all your trades? What is the average length of time in a trade? What is the average gain of all your trades? I am trying to get an idea if your system will benefit me.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Marcus

Beyond details here a few extra points to the service I provide:

    1. Classic trend following systems.
    2. Winners will typically be 3-4 x the size of losers. Winners typically 30-50% (of course “expectation” is the issue, not “winners”).
    3. Portfolios can vary, performance will vary.
    4. Risk/reward are related, so the end user can try to achieve a greater or lesser return. Drawdown of course related to these choices, and will vary too.
    5. Trades can be stopped out in days or weeks. Winners could exceed 1 year.

Are you a trend following trader now?

Mike, I don’t know what it takes to be a trend following trader. I have read all of your books, and I still have yet to get an idea of what your system is like. Most I read is about how well people (like the turtle traders) do, but not very much substance. I have been scammed multiple times before so I am very hesitant to buy anything that has not been tested out.

Sincerely,
Marcus

If you think my world is a scam please don’t join up. Just want to be upfront. I am simply giving you a head start and charging for it. You could figure it out on your own, but might spend years. There is no Holy Grail, it all takes work, but I do help people get there faster with actual systems they can apply.

Ep. 211: John Bollinger Interview with Michael Covel on Trend Following Radio

John Bollinger
John Bollinger

My guest today is John Bollinger, an American author, financial analyst, contributor to the field of technical analysis and the developer of Bollinger Bands. Since 1987, he has published the Capital Growth Letter, a newsletter which provides technical analysis of the financial markets.

The topic is Trend Following.

In this episode of Trend Following Radio we discuss:

  • Bollinger Bands as described for the lay person
  • Defining when a price is relatively high or relatively low
  • Defining “relatively high” and “relatively low”
  • Measuring volatility to determine the “width” of a Bollinger Band
  • Standard deviation
  • The beginnings of Bollinger Bands, and how John Bollinger came to put it together
  • Different ideas about volatility in the 1980s
  • Some of Bollinger’s early curiosity triggers, and why he started digging into finance after going to art school
  • Light, film, and Bollinger’s experience at the School of Visual Arts
  • Bollinger’s experience in his apprenticeship to learn technical analysis
  • “The best authority is the price itself”, and why this statement isn’t very well accepted in the mainstream
  • Differences between fundamental and technical analysts
  • Bollinger’s look at media and the presentation of his message over the years
  • Why Bollinger would be known as a quantitative analyst instead of a technician if he started his career now
  • Position sizing
  • Why volatility is the least understood aspect of the market

Parabolic Moves and Trend Following

Follow the trend to the top and get out as it is falling back down. Predicting the top is a fool’s errand. Feedback in:

James: Hi Michael, hope you are well and Asia is treating you well. You did a podcast with someone (can’t recall his name) and they mentioned taking profits in parabolic moves. Not much help I know but it is all I have. I was wondering if you could recall who it was or if you have any info for taking profits in these types of moves. More than happy to let normal moves roll over and let my trailing stop take me out but some of these parabolic moves give back too much. It is the one part where I believe I can add that extra % to my trading but have not been able to find any trading rules that adds any value. Any help [is] much appreciated. Thanks.

Covel: Don’t recall off top of my head! All good trend following trends tend to be parabolic and all are generally handled the same way. You get out after the peak, not before. I help clients more in my training/systems, but you will also see more thoughts across my books.

James: Thanks for the reply. I know I did not give you much to go on. Will keep looking.

Exploring Trend Following for the First Time

Feedback:

Michael: I have received [your] CD. Thank you very much for all the work you are doing in compiling this eclectic knowledge and putting that in one central place. I have been in tune with your work through books and podcast last few months. I am on my journey, searching for [a] method that works for me. I have not purchased anything but getting increasing[ly more] curious about your techniques that you have derived [from] primary sources and are not in public domain. Following are basic questions, when you get a chance have someone reply: Do you have one system (set of rules) or many systems that work independently? How much emphasis [do] you have on instrument selection? Out of 30 or so liquid markets even if all signals are taken with 1% risk, that is 30% risk in book? Are your systems incorporating position sizing? How long have you done back testing for systems, is there a way to see back tested data by trade? I am big in looking at contribution of individual trade to total P&L.(I am not looking for all trades to make money, but more interested in P&L distribution). Regards, Maulin P.

There are a few core systems that allow variables to be changed to meet your risk objectives. Portfolio selection is critical and how you manage the risk in said portfolio is critical. I explain all. There is a process. Not as simple as you describe, but always operates under the guise of protecting capital. Yes, position sizing. 100%. No back tests are provided. Clients can choose varying portfolios and varying risk levels. Not one size fits all. Success stories: trendfollowing.com/success.

Right and Wrong Doesn’t Help the Process

Ed Seykota recently offered on his site:

Labeling trades as right and wrong, depending on the outcome, indicates some or another emotional attachment to individual events. From the perspective of a stream of trades that generate from a trading method, you might notice that you get some winners and some losers and that your long-term results aggregate the individual events.

Spot on.

No Funnymentals in Trend Following

Feedback in:

Hi Michael, I’ve been trading trends the last 3 years and it’s been good. However, whenever I revisit Market Wizards or listen to your podcasts, I always notice that some of the great traders, including the trend followers, have some fundamental aspects in their trading plus the use of technical indicators other than price. If trading is merely trading numbers and price action is really what matters, is it foolhardy to think that trading without charts(just daily closing prices and nothing else) can be profitable? I had manually churned out a set of performance data based on some EOD price charts of the last 15 years. But I’m planning to work on evaluating my trend following system using only prices and no charts. Is there someone who has traded trends profitably without charts? I appreciate your entire work of trend following. Thank you! Warmest regards, Francis T.

The core trend followers in my books? No funnymentals (Ed Seykota term of course). None of the trend followers in my books talk about charts. They use price data. Do charts help? That’s all subjective! Price is objective.

No Desperation

Feedback:

Good Day Michael, I received your letter and DVD and am really interested in learning the techniques of trend trading. I have lost a large number of money using Futures and CFD trading platforms in South Africa. Only to uncover that the company whom I used to trade with was actually ripping me off, they use internal stop loss hunting systems and internal trading desks basically to defraud unknowing small traders like myself. I reported them to the Financial services board in South Africa and the case is currently under investigation. So to say the least I am very skeptical about trading again due to the large amount of Rands I have lost. I guess part of the reason I lost the funds was a mixture of greed, fear and ignorance. Not that I am wealthy to say the least I used my investment savings payout of 10 years, as I thought I could fast track my pension savings. Now I am self-employed and do not have any real spare cash to play around with and risk losing again. I do however feel positive after reviewing your website and in Rand terms the investment required to sign-up is quite significant for someone who has 3 small kids and a wife to support and who is self-employed. But I am prepared to take a calculated risk this time and educate myself first with a winning system, but also I need to know that the trading platform that will be used is not stacked against me the trader and it appears as your is actually stacked in favor of the trader. I hope your special offer can make it affordable or maybe you have a special payment plan option that can make it affordable to become one of the students of the process. I hope to hear from you soon.

Trend following trading is not something that relies on a broker or some other financial shark. It is based on price movements and philosophically on your entrepreneurial desire. It is a trading style that can put the odds on your side. However, no one should make any investment or start any investment research with desperate money. However, if you know your risks–no one should tell you to stop moving ahead.
