The Hard Part About Surfing

Feedback in:

Hey Michael, Not sure if you caught Seth Godin’s most recent blog post, so I thought I’d pass it along:

Surfing, the conceptual kind, is more essential than ever, it’s not optional. And the hardest part of surfing, by far, is paddling out, not surfing in. Carrying the board, getting back into the water, paddling through the waves, waiting for the next set…it’s exhausting, and surfers spend far more time doing this than they do on the other part. Having the guts to surf is what change demands. And finding the stamina to paddle back out is a key part of surfing.

I thought it had many parallels to trend following. Enjoy!

Thanks!

Trend Following Is Entrepreneurial By Definition

Feedback in:

Michael, I was just listening to your podcast with Jon Boorman and it was so fitting. I had just connected with Jerry Parker on LinkedIn and was in the middle of contacting him about getting some feedback for someone just starting out. I’d love to get some feedback from you too. I would love to find a business partner who could put up the capital while I put in the “sweat equity”. I want to do my research and develop my system and eventually start my own fund/CTA/RIA. I would, if course, be splitting my fees with my business partner. First, does that sound like a reasonable way to go about getting started. Second, how do I go about making that proposition appealing to potential partners? My goal is to one day be interviewed on your podcast as someone who has been successful in trend following and to give back to the trend following community as Jerry Parker seems to be doing.

Looking forward to your response.

Devour my books and podcast then see if you ask the same question! Also, read Seth Godin’s blog. The last few years of his entries should be an entrepreneurial eyeopener.

I’m An Elitist

Great blog post from Seth Godin:

I’m an elitist

(You might be as well).

The market isn’t always right. It’s merely the market.

Mass appeal is not always better than doing something that matters.

Increasing shareholder value is not the primary purpose of a corporation.

News with a lot of clicks isn’t always important news.

Selling out to get popular is selling yourself short.

Lowering the price at the expense of sustainability is a fool’s game.

Only producing tools that don’t need an instruction manual takes power away from those prepared to learn how to use powerful tools. And it’s okay to write a book that some people won’t finish, or a video that some don’t understand.

Giving people what they want isn’t always what they want.

Curators create value. We need more curators, and not from the usual places.

Creating and reinforcing cultural standards and institutions that elevate us is more urgent than ever.

We write history about people who were brave enough to lead, not those that figured out how to pander to the crowd.

Elites aren’t defined by birth or wealth, they are people with a project, individuals who want to do work they believe in, folks seeking to make an impact. Averaging down everything we do so that it becomes cheap and ubiquitous and palatable to all is a hollow goal.

Love it. That has been my goal since day 1.

Who Are the Trend Following Heretics?

Feedback in:

To Whom It May Concern, My name is Roger [name] and I am a senior at [name] University in Nashville, TN. Over the past year or so I have learned a great deal about trend following from Michael Covel’s podcasts and other sources. I have been actively trading the market for the last year, and by way of several mistakes and miscalculations I have arrived at trend following as the most comprehensive and profitable strategy that I have ever employed in the market. Having learned a great deal from Michael Covel, Jon Boorman and others, I have cultivated the desire to help others seek profitable opportunities in the market using a systematic trend following and risk management discipline.

As a senior in college, I am currently looking for employment opportunities in the field of trading. While I have had the privilege of meeting professionals who I have great respect for, I have noticed that trend following seems to be “heresy” among certain circles within what Mr. Covel describes as the “system”. While this makes the job search process difficult, it has ironically strengthened my commitment to continue doing what I have been doing. As popular as this methodology is among certain circles, trend following appears to be an untapped market in many ways.

With all of that being said, I appreciate all that you and your company are doing for trading education. I would be honored to be a guest on your podcast and believe that I would bring a unique perspective given my background, age, and my current quest to find a post undergraduate job. I look forward to further correspondence with you and hope to be considered for this great opportunity.

Kind regards,

Roger [name]

Thanks Roger. Maybe we try an episode this year.

BTW, who are the heretics?

Note: For those seeking employment in the trading field read Linchpin and maybe that goal of employment will dissipate.

Where To Start in Trend Following…

Feedback in:

Hi Michael Covel, my name is [name] and I graduated from Rutgers University last year with a BA in Mathematics and Economics. I have been following your podcast and have read a couple of your books and am very interested in pursuing a career in trend following. I was always disenchanted with the investment banking paradigm, but really believe in the power of trend following. I have been following the markets for the past 5 years and have invested some of my own money during that time. What are some good ways for a guy just starting out to get his foot in the door in this industry? I believe the experience that comes with working for an experienced trend follower would be invaluable. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Read Linchpin by Seth Godin.

Read Atlas Shrugged.

Read Jack Schwager’s Market Wizard books.

Read my four books.

Listen to all podcast episodes.

Knock on doors if you want a job.

If you want to be a trend trader? Get a system and start trading.

Short list–lots of advice.

Note: Be prepared to never be hired by a trend trader. Then what? Back to my list. You can also consider other options here.
