“If you have your mind made up without finishing the book, best of luck…”

Hi Michael,

I am interested in getting into Trend Following and am trying to find good entry and exit signals but I haven’t found anything good yet. I am also reading your book, about 40% through, and find that it is very generalized and more defending trend following without helping someone who is already convinced.

Have you read Chapter 10? Have you read Section III? Why the fixation on entry/exit alone over other parts of trend following that are clearly far more important? Please also define good. You have narrowed your focus to one item that you perceive withheld from you and all else is apparently superfluous. I am open to a discussion, but if you have your mind made up without finishing the book, best of luck.

I’m still making my way through the podcast archives, and finding much value there. I note that you sometimes make references to films (delighted with the mention of Reservoir Dogs), and I wonder, have you seen the John Carpenter film, “They Live”? If you haven’t, I am sure you will enjoy it, it is a “them and us” satire on the state of capitalism, with most of “the people” in a dream-like state. Great soundtrack, too.

Is that the one with all the messaging? And Roddy Piper?

That’s the very one! I have slowly arrived at podcast 138. Up until now I tried not to email about the fact that I am a repeat visitor to Thailand, yes, I love the energy of Bangkok, and it just so happens that I will be spending two weeks in Krabi in the next couple of weeks, but you went and did a Pulp Fiction thing. I had to email. That’s it. I have an email following system. There are rules. That’s it.

“Systematic trend-following may well be the best kept secret in finance. A friend of mine recently crunched the numbers on the best funds in the world. To make the final cut, a fund had to have an audited 20 year track record, and over that period also had to have earned net annualised returns of at least 20%. That’s an almost impossible hurdle. 11 funds made the final cut. Six of them were trend-following funds.

It’s not just about returns, it’s also about diversification. Trend-following funds tend to zig when other, more traditional funds, zag. And in 2008, for example, one of the worst years for financial markets in living memory, trend-following funds generated high positive returns. Given the egregious overvaluation of most stock and bond markets today, trend-following funds almost certainly have a role to play in anyone’s portfolio.

Hi Covel, want to give a suggestion to your podcast. I bought & read your book and I’m 99% converted into trend following. Great book, great info. However I would love to listen to a podcast episode where you interview someone intelligent who disagrees with both 1) you and 2) trend following. Its good to hear and know the 2 sides of the argument before I embark on this road. I think many of your listeners would also love to hear that. It would add to your credibility having the guts to bring someone who might expose you.

And what exactly are they coming on to disagree about? Cause they are not disagreeing with just me, they are disagreeing with every trader, academic and fact in my book.

Hi Michael,

I came across your work around 3-4 months ago, I don’t remember how but I’m glad I did. I’ve gone back and listened to many of your podcasts and in one of them you spoke about the ability or wondered if someone could be taught to become a Trend Follower with no market experience.

I don’t remember it exactly, however I felt it described me perfectly. For the last 2.5 years I have worked in Foreign Exchange as an Account Manager in Australia. A person who already worked their took me under their wing and has taught me about trading over the past 18 months. He has been a trader for 17 years and trades Currencies, Stocks (Options), Commodities and uses the same strategy regardless of the instrument.

At the time I did not know, however they are a trend follower so from day 1, that’s what I have also been taught…. and when I look at things now I don’t understand why everyone isn’t a trend follower (music to your ears) as it makes 100% complete sense to me.

I guess I am writing to you to say, YES! Someone can be taught from zero experience in the financial markets to become and be taught to be a trend follower. The firs thing my mentor told me to do was read Jesse Livermore’s books which I have done. Over the past 18 months, I have read those books, found new mentors (yourself included) joined Twitter to follow you guys and paper traded for 12 months.

I’m not a rash, spur of the moment guy, and I think that’s why Trend Following appeals to me, I’ve read and listened to many many people considered to be successful traders in this area and really taken my time to understand and learn about the markets and more importantly how to be a successful trader/trend follower.

I just wanted to reach out and say YES, from an absolute novice with no experience you can be taught to be a trend follower, and I think it’s the only way to trade! Your book has been ordered from Amazon (New Version) along with TurtleTrader, Market Wizards and Trading in the Zone to accompany my 3 Livermore books and my wall of mentors:
