Approach the Market in a New Way

Feedback in:

I want to thank you for writing your books. They got me to approach the market in a new way. I have dived head long into algo/quant trading through trend trading. As long as you trust the system and follow through you will succeed. I think that the simpler systems are better than complex. Also the markets are noisier than they were 20 years ago which make trend trading harder, but it is still the most successful method for trading. Thanks again Michael.

Ep. 332: Brian Proctor Interview with Michael Covel on Trend Following Radio

My guest today is Brian Proctor, an original TurtleTrader trained by Richard Dennis and Bill Eckhardt and today is a Managing Director at EMC Capital. He began his futures career in 1982, with experience at both the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade. Proctor was a participant in the renowned Turtle Program, and managed all trading operations at C&D Commodities through 2000.

The topic is Trend Following.

In this episode of Trend Following Radio we discuss:

  • Proctor’s first trading moments and the Turtle program
  • Proctor’s view on Liz Cheval, what she brought to his firm, and why she’s still an integral part of EMC today
  • How trend following strategies have continued to excel over the years
  • Diversification and the Swiss franc
  • Black swans and how the impossible can and does happen
  • Bill Eckhardt’s influence

There Is Only One Turtle Story

How do you make it on Wall Street? Some feedback:

Dear Mr. Covel, My name is [Name] and I just finished reading “The Complete TurtleTrader” for the second time. I recently graduated college as a psychology major but I am determined to work in the finance/investment world. Therefore, two quotes from page 15 and 16 really spoke to me:

“I think it’s far more important to know what Freud thinks about death wishes than what Milton Friedman thinks about deficit spending.” “Go down to Wall Street today after work with the hot-shot traders all earning $500,000 a year at the big banks and you’ll find very few who talk about Freud being the ticket to making millions.”

I’m writing this email to get your advice. I’ve applied to many big investment firms and haven’t even gotten a call back. I’ve even applied to Vanguard as a lowly Client Relationship specialist just to get my foot in the door. I did get a call back from them, but it’s been two months.

How can I secure the career I desire? It seems as if nobody recognizes the importance of psychology in finance. I’ve read well over 100 investment books in the past two years, I’ve beaten the market and I’ve even started an investment/personal finance website. I’ve included this in my cover letters and there’s STILL nothing. Right now I plan to go at it on my own and take my Series 65 soon, but I wonder if there’s a better way.

Because your work really affected me and it seems as if you (and Richard Dennis) understand how I feel, what should I do?

Thanks a lot. I appreciate your time, keep up the amazing work!

But you missed a big issue. The role of entrepreneur in investing, trading. Trading has a few stories of working for someone else, but the real way to freedom and success in the space is DIY. I would recommend a non-trading book: Linchpin by Seth Godin. 50 pages in I suspect you might see the flaw in your pursuit.

PS. Only one Turtle story.

Singapore Calling!

Feedback in:

Dear Michael:

Having just recently finished ‘The Complete Turtle Trader’, I must commend you on a very informative (& readable) analysis on the development, success & continued relevance of the original Turtle program. For guide, I am based in Singapore as part of [Name] derivative trading team. As you spend a fair bit of time in the region, it would be a pleasure to meet for lunch (or dinner) on your next stay here.

Don’t Focus on Account Size, Focus on Learning and Process

Feedback in:

Merry Christmas, I have been listening to your podcast for a few weeks now. Great education and great guests. Listen, I am a 18 yo kid (on his way to becoming a man) from Montreal. I have been doing simulations since I was 16 and I have been reading a lot of books about trading lately. I have just started your turtle trader. I am going to start trading in 2014. I have a few questions:
1) Do have any tips and tricks for people starting of with small accounts (I will have 2000$)?
2) What are your exit strategies when you are profitable on a trader? In other words, who do you avoid turning a win into a loss?
3) How big should my positions be?

Thank you, [name]

First step? My books: here. The tips and tricks so to speak start there. My TurtleTrader book is a great step. Also, if you need more personal support my training is an option: here.

If You Want A Guarantee Buy A Toaster!

A question arrived today:

Will your book ‘Trend Following’ help me develop a trading system to become profitable?

I replied: For some people yes, and for some people no. Feel free to follow-up. He replied:

Will your other books help me?

All of my books will help some people. My books will not help all people. There are reasons for this.

Risk Management, Stops, Exits, Losers and Winners

Feedback in:

Hello Michael, thanks for accepting my friend inquiry. First, I want to say that I am a big fan of your podcast and interviews. Really great stuff. About myself? I have traded for 5 years, but have not traded profitably. I think my largest hurdle is not holding onto the winners. I do not give my entries enough room. Therefore I keep my losers very short, but very often see the position run after stopped out. In a nutshell my strategy is to move the stop to the entry point as soon as the position has a little bit of room. But so many times the position turns around just to touch my stop and then move on. Do you have any advice for me? Would you say that’s just risk management and part of the business? Because I think I miss too many good trades with this strategy. Thanks a lot in advance and have a nice time in Asia.

Frank

My first advice would be to read one of my books. Not a dodge to your question, but my books are filled with the necessary detail not easily put in one email response.
