Backslapping at CNBC: The True Path to Wealth! Not.

Hi Michael. Keep up the great work and the podcasts. Love ’em. I haven’t emailed you (as former customer) for years BUT I thought of you when I read this (ignore the website, it’s only ever bearish, but the CNBC clip attached is hilarious!). Why is it so funny? Because after Fed minutes the market tanked, then CNBC talking heads apparently said to buy it, then it rallied, then they came on TV and all gave themselves high fives for “nailing” such a great call as it went unchanged. But in the last half hour it tanked and I don’t think they told the viewers they’re retracting their high fives! One of the good things about trading in Australia is that you can sleep thru the BS because the NYSE closes at 6am, so we wake up to the only thing that really matters; the closing price!

Trend Following Is Not “Eyeballing”

When do I enter and exit? When do trend followers know it is the right time to enter or exit? Some feedback:

Michael, how do you know when a trend starts, and when a trend ends? I’m not asking for your precise signals, but you never mention that somewhere in your writings or student presentations there actually is some precise signal for entering and a precise signal for exiting. And what are the signals for confirming that a trend is in existence? I would feel much better about you if you just said that you did indeed have proprietary signals for the existence of a trend, a signal for entering, a signal for exiting, and that you impart this to your students. I hope you won’t say that you just eyeball a trend and make a judgement without signals as to the entry and exit.

In terms of trend existence–a trend can never be measured or properly known until after an exit signal. There is no eyeballing in the trend following world. This is about systems.

Falling Prey to The Wall Street Journal Spin

1. In my 4 books I address multiple historical instances where trend following was pronounced “dead”.

2. Trend following is not meant to be a currency only strategy. Diversification is mission critical.

3. Some trend following performance for comparison: https://www.trendfollowing.com/performance. Please keep eyes wide open to a longer time horizon v. the short-term focus of a WSJ reporter spin pen.

4. Taylor sounds as if he is using fundamentals to explain trend following strategy. Trend following is a systematic technical strategy. There is no fundamental usage.
