Jim Rogers: Make Life an Adventure

We have some great friends that have been living in Singapore for some time now. A few years back they persuaded my wife and I and our 2 young kids to jump on a plane and travel half way round the world to see them. We now obviously have the Asia bug and go over every year to get our fix–traveling around whilst we are there. It’s amazing how opinionated people are on Singapore–mostly the ones that have never been. We just love it. Anyway whilst at the airport waiting for our flight back to the UK, I was constantly being pestered by my 7-year old boy for a toy plane–specifically the one we would be traveling back on–the A380. I headed for the nearest gift shop and spent the next half an hour aimlessly browsing whilst the mini ‘pilot’ tried to make up his mind which color to have. Searching through the book section I stumbled across a copy of Jim’s ‘Street Smarts’. Perfect I thought, this will cheer up the 12-hour flight home.

As ‘both’ A380’s taxied down the runway. I opened Jim’s book to discover someone had scribbled on the front title page! On closer inspection I realized [he had signed it].

Having listened to your podcast interview 301 with him in Singapore, reading the signed copy made the whole book even more enjoyable.

Find Your Way to Trend Following Diversity

Hi Michael,

I’ve read your books and am now onto the podcasts and really like the stuff. Very helpful. The podcasts are especially great because they can be digested easily while on the treadmill (as Jerry Parker says in your interviews).

So one of the realities of trend following is admitting you don’t know what comes next and to counter this inability to predict the future all markets will be traded to “diversify” hoping that one or two big winners pay for all the losers. In theory this is great. In practice, it can be rather difficult to get enough capital together to actually run a diverse portfolio of futures contracts…I suppose ETFs could work…Thoughts?

The best way to find diversity as a trend following trader, and trading a diversified tracking portfolio, is via one of three instruments:

1. futures
2. leaps
3. etfs (leveraged)

Those give coverage on all market types.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Dear Michael, I admire what you do and can relate to the concepts shared in your podcast.

For the past 12 months I’ve been developing a trend following expert advisor. The EA is currently running on a small live account. However, due to the account size it will be quite some time before I can make a living from it, which is an impending problem for me with a young family.

The backtests suggest the EA has got a lot of potential, but I’m at odds about where to take it from here. I’ve gone it alone up until now. You’re the first person I’ve approached about this. Can you offer me any advice or guidance as to my next course of action?

I just read your book The Complete TurtleTrader and already bought the others. Starting Trend Following now. Do you have any idea when are you coming to presentations here in Brazil? I’ve been three times in USA (Miami, Orlando and California recently) for vacations and would like to attend one presentation of yours the next time. Is there a schedule somewhere?

I thank you so much for changing my way of thinking about the markets. I listened each of your episodes at least twice, some of them three or four times and I’m learning a lot with you and your guests. I even started to read a lot more because your guests are always indicating books. I read books from Schwager, Tharp, Altucher, Radge, Basso and the list goes on…

Dear Mr. Covel,

I’ve been listening to your podcast for about 4 months now and more than ever I really wanted to reach out to express my gratitude for putting together such a great show. I used to use technical analysis trade in college but since graduation I have been working in risk at a large asset manager in NYC so haven’t had much time. Around January of this year I decided I was going to get back into trading my own account and during my research I came across the turtle traders, which lead me to your book and subsequently your podcast.

Listening to your interviews with Michael Melissinos and Glenn Graham earlier this week really got me motivated to take my work to the next level. I am 25 so hearing from those guys about how they started out when they were about my age really got me excited. I don’t plan on dropping everything to open a fund, but it lends some credibility to this hobby that I keep pouring hours into. Top that off with your latest episode about how most of my generation base their decisions off a quick Google search and it makes me feel even more energized about the reading and research I enjoy to do (I apologize on my generation’s behalf, I have no idea how the hipster phenomenon took hold either).

Really I just wanted to say thank you for all the work you are doing. I have been listening for so long now I figured it was about time I let you know you have one more happy listener in the states. Your podcast is one of the highlights of my week and the guests you manage to bring on is simply amazing. Keep up the great work.
