Making It Happen in 2014

Dear Michael, I have recently discovered your work via your website and the Trend Following Bible. Wow! So many lightening bolts! It’s as if I’ve arrived at the shores of a New World. I’m in the process of learning, absorbing and immersing myself into the world of trend following and my mind is in over-drive thinking of how I can create a life and a living in trend following trading. I simply wanted to say thank you for the work you have done, and are doing, to educate and inform people about this fascinating field. Genuine life altering experiences are rare but this has been one for me, for this I am truly grateful. Here’s to a thriving 2014 and making it happen.

The Schooling of Trend Following

Dear Mr. Covel, I am a First-Year MBA student at the University of Virginia and I am very interested in trading and trend-following. I enjoy your books and your podcast very much and learn a great deal from them. Ever since reading Trend Following four years ago, I have researched and developed trend-following systems and I currently trade a trend-following system for my personal account. After business school, I would love to conduct research for a quantitative investment firm while apprenticing under a fund manager/system developer. I would love to speak with you about what I could do to realize this ambition. Would you be available for a 30-minute phone conversation on January 9th at 11 a.m.? Getting Started with Your Trading Business Advice

Justin: I’m not sure if you’d be willing to help, but I’m struggling with the next step(s) for a trading related software/app project I want to pursue. I have the idea/functionality and ideas for pricing models in mind but I haven’t taken the step of getting someone to actually write the application/develop the site. It’s not a terribly complex idea, but it’s related to one of the key areas of success for all traders & I have yet to see a service meet this need. I have no experience in dealing with intellectual property issues so I’m concerned about protecting the idea (if it’s even possible at this early stage). I was wondering if you might be able to provide any insight/advice since I know you’ve had great success in creating proprietary systems. If you need more info to help please just let me know. If you’d be willing to take some time to Skype & talk through it I’d love to have the chance to pick your brain. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Covel: Not sure I follow. Can you be precise what you are doing and how I can help?

Justin: Sorry. I have a trading service/application I want to develop. But I don’t know how to protect the idea or if I even can at this stage as it’s only an idea. I’d love to give you an overview of what it is so you can better understand what I’m talking about but also for honest feedback on the potential value it could provide to other traders but I am very ignorant when it comes to IP. When you were getting your projects going in the past did you protect the idea by something akin to a non disclosure agreement? Or did you have some other means to protect the idea while working with other people to get it from the idea stage to reality? I apologize as I know I’m being vague but I hope this makes more sense.

Covel: There is not a short answer. Best answer? IP attorney time. If not, you probably pay more later than less now.

Universities Don’t Help With Trend Trading

Hi Michael, How have you been enjoying Saigon so far? I’m a new trader and I have been trend trading stocks and FX for a few months now. My style of trading is somewhat like Jon Boorman, who was on one of your podcasts. Recently, I have been thinking about getting a Master degree in Financial Engineering since I wanted to learn how to make my trading more mechanical, along with how to better control risk & position sizing. Money matters aside, do you think it’s worth it to go to graduate school for this? Or is there a better way to learn these specific skills? Also, may I ask how you came up with your trading system? Was it a solo work or did you need a programmer to work on it? Thanks a bunch! And have a nice day!

There is no formal school to help you become a trend trader. Do that (formal school) and you only delay progress. You can either code yourself or hire. Done both ways and there is no right or only way. My books, other books I recommend, content on my websites, podcast and my training at trendfollowing.com/products all help people get there quicker versus formal education.
