The podcast of Michael Covel is a treasure of knowledge. It brings you the basics about trading but also can enrich the most experienced of money managers. Michael is discussing all the topics with his great guests in a casual manner of an experienced host. His questions and remarks are a great addendum to the insights Of his guests and you see very quickly that he knows the “inside baseball” of the subjects discussed. This is not a “trend-following” only podcast. You have guests on many aspects of life, success, and zen-like attitude to survive the many twists and turns of life. Trading systems, risk management, and customer relations are the core of a very eclectic range of subjects that I found very interesting. I am sure that anyone that will listen too will feel the same mixture of pleasure and knowledge.

We Don’t All Live Forever

Hi Michael,

Love the podcast. Just started listening going back into the archives and have found it very enlightening. I have a question with regards to a comment you made in this specific podcast (364) about shooting for average and who wants to be just average. You are speaking my language there!

What is your response to people when they say they got rich because of investing in a diversified index portfolio instead of getting rich by taking on more risk?

For example, authors of books like “Millionaire Teacher” by Andrew Hallam or even the Coffeehouse books that claim to do really well by just buying index funds and riding the market returns instead of taking on more risk shooting for higher returns.

When people challenge me on the index fund thing saying it is the only way, my response is that the authors of these books got rich (define rich right!) because they ended up saving so much of their income as opposed to gaining their wealth through market returns. Both books (more so Hallam’s) talk about being frugal and then investing. I would love to hear how you answer this question!

If you don’t have time to answer, I totally understand and will still continue to be a loyal listener…

Trend Following Weekly Moving Averages

Reader: I saw the documentary you posted on Twitter regarding fractals and I am extremely happy to see that you studied the source. There are very rare people that do that. I tested some systems based on weekly moving averages/breakouts in futures markets. The results are very good, but one has to wait the whole week & it requires tremendous patience. What say regarding weekly strategies in futures markets?

Covel: Weekly. Yes! Many top pros do so too. Were you looking for a quick confirm?

Reader: Yes, because I used to trade daily time frames. Never thought of weekly. Now when I tested I found it to be smooth. Although there are sometimes only 4-5 trades a year. Also, in some stock futures I backtested and found the results slightly negative over 10 years. But in combination of overall portfolio it was greatly positive. Also, I think that the majority will not think of weekly time frames while trading futures in this High Frequency world of today.

Covel: I agree. Many agree. It works. Has for decades. Patience is an issue for any strategy.

I’ve been visiting your website for a while now and I just wanted to drop a note of appreciation for the interviews that you put up on your website. All of the interviews I have listened to have been extremely interesting and high quality. I particularly like the diversity of interviewee’s and content covering a wide range of subjects.

I think I first came across you site while looking for information about Daniel Kahneman and came across your interview with him on 212. Which led me to your others interviews. I bought William Poundstone’s ‘Fortune’s Formula’ immediately after listening to your podcast 254 with him and now have a couple of your books on order.

Although I’ve always had an interest in economics, I’ve never been all that interested in trading before but you website has convinced me to take a closer look. Another thing on my mind: Keep up your great work! It is very inspirational. Your podcasts are always a highlight that I listen to when traveling to work. In podcast 365 you talked a bit about how some fund managers would de-leverage. Does that just mean they stop risking their money? I like the point made that large drawdowns aren’t necessarily a bad thing.
