“Why Do You Like My Podcast?”

A recent email exchange:

Listener: Michael, Just found your podcast and I’m really enjoying it.

Covel: Thanks! Why do you like it? Starting steps for more? Go here.

Listener: Why do I like your podcast? If you are actually interested, here is a long answer to a short question:

I have two bachelor degrees (including electrical engineering) and have worked in many fields – air traffic controller, test engineer, applications engineer, marketing, sales, etc. At about age 40 I went back to school and got a masters in operations research and finally found my calling in the analytics field.

Currently I work as a one man analytics department for a medium size credit union doing whatever analytical modeling and reporting work is required – retail credit risk recently.

My experience is that most useful models help an executive make incrementally better decisions at the margins – not huge homeruns every time… but that is enough to be really valuable. In my work with analytics I find that even sophisticated people want to put too much faith in a math model and they expect it to always be 100% correct in answering any possible question. They pour all their spoken and unspoken expectations and hopes into a model and expect that it will be like some computer from Star Trek that thinks for itself and can solve any problem posed.

So, I’ve been in the messy proverbial trenches of day-to-day business analytics which shades my opinion of too good to be true investing approaches. I don’t do any work with investing on a professional basis but I enjoy reading about the topic with the hope of improving my results by a percent point or two over the long haul. I’m not really an adherent to the efficient market theory because simple observation of stock market behavior doesn’t really match the theory.

But, I’ve always been a mostly buy and hold type investor for my personal retirement money because I haven’t seen anything that made sense as a way to particularly outperform except perhaps factor tilt towards value or small cap. Most evidence seems to show that active investment on the whole underperforms.

However recently I’ve become interested in the momentum/trend following approach after reading Wesley Grey’s book DIY Financial Advisor. In fact listening to your interview of Wes Grey is how I got turned on to your podcast. The whole momentum approach is attractive because it seems pragmatic, evidence based and systematic and might provide that incremental edge I’ve been pursuing. In particular I like the potential for reducing tail risk and the big draw downs.

I’ve only listened to a few episodes but I enjoy the podcast because it is educational and because it is interesting to hear different takes on trend following from both you and your practitioner guests.

Sorry for the long email and thanks for the links. I will certainly be tuning in on a regular basis.

You are welcome!

“A Big THANK YOU!”

Feedback in:

By the way, I [forgot to take] the opportunity to really thank you for your multiple initiatives (trend-following website, books and podcasts…) The quality of the interviews and content is really amazing, and your drive to dig deep and to share your understanding with your audience is really great and addictive. As a young retail trader (successfully doing it since 2 years) and entrepreneur I have the impression as if I gained years of experience by “just” reading and listening to what you produced. As you and your guest said during one of your latest podcasts, surrounding yourself with virtual mentors (Steve Jobs, Disney…) and doing your homework is an extremely important step too in the bumpy road of an entrepreneur.

Discovering you and your guests is an important milestone and great moment for me!

So,

A big THANK YOU!

Thanks for the passionate feedback!

“…interesting for their intersection of the ideas…”

Feedback in:

Dear Michael, your last couple shows were interesting for their intersection of the ideas. When I was listening to the Watts show, I was thinking that his description of money sounds a lot like Harari’s description in Sapiens–money as a collective narrative or myth. I was wondering if Harari had listened to Watts at some point. Then you had on Tim Price who mentioned the same big idea and cited Harari explicitly. Have you ever reached out to Harari and considered getting him on? That would be an interesting show, although his first book (Sapiens) is much more interesting than his new one. Price also mentioned Beinhocker’s “Origin of Wealth” which is one of the most underrated books about economics in recent years–he would be worth looking at, too. More broadly, Beinhocker is going into complexity theory. The foundations of that were in a very interesting paper from 1972 entitled “More Is Different” by P. W. Anderson: here. Anderson later won a Nobel Prize in physics. He is still alive, but very old and I don’t know what kind of shape he is in, but if you wanted to get another Nobel winner he would be one to go after. Here’s a lecture he gave about a decade ago on the development of complexity theory based on his paper: here. I think you’ll find it up your alley. You have an interesting show and I enjoy listening to it. I’m always amused by the personal history, too, since I’ve now lived in the Falls Church/Vienna VA area for about 25 years.

“I like to hear from the ‘dead’…”

Feedback in:

Oh, how I show my age missing discourse like this. Besides Donahue, we had William Buckley, Dick Cavett, and, often, even Johnny Carson. Hearing liberal vs. conservative in an informative way was so, so nice. NOT screaming, NOT engaging in relentless raw ad hominem attacks, NOT being proud of ignorance, nor being illogical–and so smug about doing all this. Even the audiences back then were different. Civility is always welcome. I like to hear from the dead, because what they say is locked down, therefore, allowing a true evaluation of them.

Thanks!

“Just keeps getting better…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael, what a great combination of conversations with Charles! I am about 4 hours in and the information just keeps getting better. Wanted to say thank you for the great and varied content. I would also like to share what I have learned since starting to follow you over the past 6 months or so. The power of language and more significantly the importance of right language and what that represents to my interpretation is truly insightful. What I realize is that:

– I have a long way to go (and 15 years in FX management means i have to unlearn many things as well)
– There is an absolute need for clarity of language
– Limiting the negative self-talk to very specific timely events, not large general broad sweeping ones

So thank you for the journey so far. As a side note, do you list the books that yourself and your guests recommend or mention on the podcasts on your website? Michael I will be honest I am leaving the above sentence in as a example of picking up my own system one thinking and the way search engines are making us look for easy and immediate answer. My mindset went straight to typing for an answer rather than doing search for one. A little research goes a long way.

Keep up the great work.

Thank you,

“500th episode with Charles Faulkner was eye opening…”

Feedback in:

Dear Michael,

First of all I have to say a big thank you! Your podcasts broadened my knowledge base and moreover, it provided me the impulse to change the way I’m thinking about markets, market participants and my own work.

I’m currently managing 2bn € AuM for institutional investors and the job is really embarrassing to me. The way money is managed in the industry is pro cyclical. You’re hiding behind benchmarks & marketing brochures and worse – due to regulations – you’re just paid for avoiding risks. I have enough and to spare!

Your 500th episode with Charles Faulkner was eye opening to me. It started a mental firework in my brain! I really want to change something in my life. As I was always a great fan of behavioral economics, and I would love to combine this direction with NLP and do coaching work in the finance space. Especially in Europe, we’re decades behind in comparison to the US.

As NLP is very criticized in [other country] for not being a “real science”, I wanted to ask you what do you think about NLP? At the moment I look at different coaching techniques. As I now that you are very open minded and a great thinker I really appreciate your feedback!

Best regards,

NLP has a great many benefits. Any effort that brings a greater understanding to us irrational humans is alright by me.

“I feel the need to thank you for the fantastic podcasts…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael, I never email people out of the blue, but I feel the need to thank you for the fantastic podcasts. I find I get a good laugh, some usable information, and some good entertainment during each episode. I am a Forex trader for my career and love every minute of it. We have different trade practices but the core fundamentals of trading, regardless of the method or system people use, IMO, have massive crossover. Anyway. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
