My guest today is Leroy Hood, a world-renowned scientist and recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2011. He co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in 2000, served as its first President from 2000-2017, and is a Professor and Chief Strategy Officer. Dr. Hood was a faculty member at Caltech, serving for 10 years as the Chair of Biology. During this period, he and his colleagues developed four sequencer and synthesizer instruments that paved the way for the Human Genome Project’s successful mapping and understanding of the human genome. He and his students also deciphered many of the complex mechanisms of antibody diversification. In 1992, Dr. Hood founded and chaired the Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Washington, the first academic department devoted to cross-disciplinary biology.

“I feel enough is enough and I should hang my boots now…”

Feedback in:

Hey Mike,

I have been in the market for 5 years… unprofitable!

I have lost quite a lot of money as per my standards. I heard your podcast and have started trend following in Index Options now.

I have tried all types of trading and investments, like I started with investments, tried swing, intraday and commodities and am at a loss for now.

But I am very persistent, it’s been 5 years now when I look back on some excel sheets or some notes I took back 4-5 years ago. I feel enough is enough and I should hang my boots now but by nature I am very persistent and imaginative. I think of some new logic and try again.

I know a trend following strategy which worked for me for a few weeks until in 2 weeks it took 90% profit I have made. But luckily I still had 10% profit.

Can you please guide me on how I can control my risk in trend following?

Thank you!

Best Regards,
M. M.

Two weeks you used a trend following system? Then lost 90%? I am willing to bet you were not trading a trend following system in any way. The links below will set you straight.

“Entering a trade even when trend is not clearly established…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael,

Biggest challenge on trading:
a. Entering a trade even when trend is not clearly established.
b. Hesitation in taking profits when it was there.

Regards,
Pradeep B.

No. The problem is not having a complete system. Start with my FAQS below and you will solve it.

“Congrats on that great podcast with Paul Mulvaney…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael,

Congrats on that great podcast with Paul Mulvaney. His point about asset raising reminded me of a similar email response I received in 2005 from Liz Cheval. I was really hoping you would ask about his very concentrated portfolio that he still maintains today. You have Transtrend with 400 assets on one end and Mulvaney with 40 on the other. Lots of debate amongst the TF’s on that issue. Thanks once again for getting Paul on.

Best regards,
Patrick

Thanks.

“Double bottoms, H&S, channels…”

Feedback in:

System still under development but currently focusing on different patterns that appear in the charts. Double bottoms, H&S, channels etc. Tend to use 1H – Daily timeframe. Have tried day trading but simply don’t have time to watch the screen all day.

Nick T.

I would stop all of that.

ASAP.

Dead end.
