No Funnymentals in Trend Following

Hi Michael, I’ve been trading trends the last 3 years and it’s been good. However, whenever I revisit Market Wizards or listen to your podcasts, I always notice that some of the great traders, including the trend followers, have some fundamental aspects in their trading plus the use of technical indicators other than price. If trading is merely trading numbers and price action is really what matters, is it foolhardy to think that trading without charts(just daily closing prices and nothing else) can be profitable? I had manually churned out a set of performance data based on some EOD price charts of the last 15 years. But I’m planning to work on evaluating my trend following system using only prices and no charts. Is there someone who has traded trends profitably without charts? The core trend followers in my books? No funnymentals (Ed Seykota term of course). None of the trend followers in my books talk about charts. They use price data. Do charts help? That’s all subjective! Price is objective.

Young Person Starting Out

It’s funny how the universe works. Some great feedback:

Heya Michael, this is Moon here, the lady who chose to sit beside you on the 1st day of the DC Conference and from Singapore. It’s really exhilarating to see you in the DC, Mike. I’m really glad and proud of myself that I chose that seat that day.

As you might have not known ‘cos we haven’t talked much at all, I’ve been a great fan of yours since you wrote the book ‘The Complete Turtle Trader’ and very honestly, that is what shaped the great mind frame for discipline and psychology in trading for me. I’d even say it takes up a good 30% of what I do everyday. Next time you come to Singapore, I’m gonna have to ask for your signature. And you didn’t know you met a huge fan, I was just holding it in!

Last but not least, I have really taken good direction to what you have suggested to me to write a book. And really, just looking at the content page, I can really foresee an extremely invaluable and good book coming up. And why I say that is because I took myself out of the shoes of an Author and put myself into those of a beginner or novice who knows nothing or is interested to learn about skills of the trade, and in that perspective just by looking at the content page, it sells! I’d honestly pick up the book if I am a novice, if I didn’t know anything or just simply requiring more information. And thus, I have been feeling very motivated after I got back to Singapore, have been relaxing and chilling out on my own in a couple of serene places just to let ideas seep in, and whilst I’m most relaxed, that’s the time where great ideas sit and find clarity and organization in my mind.

As I sign off here, just wanna say thank you so much for being so receptive and open to me. You have been really helpful and truly sincere in sharing your experiences and invaluable knowledge this whole time and I am really grateful for that. The old adages say that ‘Serendipities are only present to those who embrace everything in life.’ Let’s stay connected and see you soon!

2008 Crisis: Reality TV

Hey Mike, Awhile ago you linked me up with your publishing agent. We had several pleasant email exchanges, now I can’t find his info. Can you provide please? In addition, your opinion on this project, I was contacted by a guy who worked with a major mortgage servicing company during the crisis. His job was to review hardship letters from folks about to lose their homes. He filed away 100’s of these and wants to do a book chronicling the crisis from the POV of the homeowner using the letters. Seems like a real life reality TV show type book to me and a great idea. Any thoughts on the viability of the idea? Thanks!

Portfolio Selection Queries

Mr. Covel. First, thank you for a great job preaching not only trend following but the importance of a systematic approach to trading. Your web site is something I have come across recently, and I feel I have found a gem, because it is very difficult to find good relevant technical trading information. On slow trading days I have some great interview to look forward to. I use a volatility based trading strategy on the commodities I trade, with a Secure F (trailing) stop and proper position sizing. The last being the most important risk- and money management tool. Being from the outskirts of Europe, I am probably one of very few Norwegian followers, but I stick my head out with a suggestion and a question. Linda Raschke had a presentation at the Society of Technical Analysts (STA) in London UK, recently. Being one of very few women in the industry, she has an impressive track record and very interesting to listen to. She would be a good subject for an interview. My recent focus, has been scanning techniques for individual stocks or commodities – basically getting rid of non performing outliers and keep the “asymmetric positive skewed trades/stocks”. Is this a topic that has been explored in one or more of your interviews or is there other sources that you would recommend?
