Michael, I just listened to your interview with Howard Friedman and very much enjoyed it. At the end you made the offer to follow up and ask for some trend following investment direction/advice. I would like to take you up on that offer.

I personally liked your willingness to approach the topics I’ve seen most people shy away from in today’s climate. I wish he would have approached it in good faith as well, but at least the problem was highlighted. Hopefully, you’re able to get someone on the podcast who is willing to honestly dive into that topic and try to get to the bottom of its root cause.

The trend following philosophy to me is: That we live in the fragile universe and must add in a bit of antifragile utility. So your local school district planned only for life continuing as normal rather than having an antifragile backup plan. And you’re surprised by this? I would be shocked to find that a school district had a war room that had gamed this. More likely these same folks are funding their 401-k plans to support their state sponsor pension plans and have never heard of you (sorry), trend following or planning for a black swan event. As a solution let’s suggest that those who are interested should simply look to the “homeschooler parents.” This is your antifragile local community of folks who are not relying on the system. For those parents, it’s just another day in the virtual school. You are simply looking at the clueless administrators who drank the cool-aid. The old adage is there is no amount of money too small to invest wisely. Likewise, there is no amount of money to invest poorly. Apply that to the school district and it’s spendthrifts. Was it bad for me to see SPY drop from 330 to 311 in one session (2xATR). And then go to 250? Antifragile trend trading. Keep fighting the good fight but don’t be shocked that your district is not antifragile.

As usual, your contents are extremely good. But as you said in chapter 5 of the little book of trading even mentors have mentors. What I’m looking for now is not a system from someone else but a mentor that would hopefully help me walk my own path. I really think that you are the best trading author out there and I really learned a lot from you.

I don’t always prepare myself for a reversal (which I really should) and then, when it happens in those cases, it catches me off guard rather than being forearmed with an already in the place exit plan. Part of that problem, too, is when the market gaps open widely in the direction away from my profit target. I need to prepare more for that possibility and simply close out the position. I get into an ‘I think (actually I hope) it will rebound’ thought loop. And we know where that invariably goes. Again, I really need to develop better trading habits and not enter trades half thought out.
Just responding to your question has made me aware of additional interesting facets of this issue of which I was not fully aware of previously.

The Friedman episode? Why?

I didn’t know Friedman heading in. Whereas most of your guests are agreeable, this one was disagreeable. Disagreeable is more entertaining. I find myself leaning in and listening more closely when there is disagreement. The buildup was most fascinating. One of those “you have to listen to twice” to fully appreciate your prep, plan, and execution. Like a great movie with a twist at the end you didn’t see coming. The first time I listened, I didn’t notice much contention up until the stop and frisk question. Then I screamed out loud when he defended De Blasio. I imagine that was one of your toughest “bite your tongue” moments. I certainly didn’t bite mine listening in the car. You somehow remained poised. After relistening, I recognize you incrementally needling with each additional poignant question, as well as his dodging in answering with substance. In retrospect, the turning point was when he referred to you making a statement rather than asking a question. The “blacks killing blacks” part was clearly the ultimate trigger. I suspect he would have dodged it regardless if phrased differently. I wonder if he has ever been broached with the question and he was uncomfortable articulating his point of view, or if it completely caught him off guard. Was it one of his “no go” questions? Curious what other “no go’s” there were. Been listening to you for years Michael. Not only have you helped me become a great trader, we conveniently share the same value system. The times I disagree with you are not few and far between, they are never. Personal responsibility and data.

Michael,

I came across your podcast by chance about 2 weeks ago and have listened to about 30 of them since (at 1.5x the speed). Your interviewing style is very good. You let the guest speak without constantly interrupting them. Your questions are well thought out and researched yet still “conversationalist”. Very much enjoy the variety of guests especially the one with Jack Canfield. The last one with Howard Friedman was….interesting. If he thinks that your question/comment was racist, would he have said the same if the data suggested that instead of black men, killers were women? Or gays? Or transgender? Or disabled? Or White? Or ? (and I am a minority…non-white). Data rarely lies. As a professional, he should have continued the discussion. Even before the surprise ending, I found Howard distant and not so engaging as other guests. You’ve got a good podcast and I look forward to the new ones….in the meantime, I am making my way through your large library.
