“Risk and allocation continue to be the biggest challenge…”

Feedback in:

The biggest challenge I have faced in trading is only taking small positions. I have been trading for 20 years off and on, I started in college without much money. Risk and allocation continue to be the biggest challenge.

Thanks,
Dan S.

“It would seem to make sense to maximize the benefits by applying that knowledge to shorter term trends…”

Feedback in:

Hello Mike,

Reading through the FAQs this morning, and wondered if you could expand on this one:

Q: Can your courses and systems be applied to shorter time frames like hourly or 4-hour charts? Does day trading work in conjunction with trend following?
A: No. Day trading is fool’s gold. Michael’s systems and courses will be worth millions to you over a lifetime.

I can understand why people ask the question – it seems logical that shorter term trends ‘ought’ to be tradeable in the same way as longer term trends.

I’m now retired and giving serious consideration to the Trend Following course(s) come autumn (fall) so that I can manage a retirement account, spending a limited amount of time daily managing with daily charts, or possibly a limited amount of time weekly with weekly charts.

Assuming I managed to master the Trend Following course successfully, as I have time available to monitor markets intraday, it would seem to make sense to maximize the benefits by applying that knowledge to shorter term trends with a separate trading account, as a way of using available time to generate additional returns/income, instead of looking for some other completely novel way of generating additional income.

Hope this makes sense.

Regards,
Malcolm U.

Intra day trading is a different animal. It’s not trend following at all. You don’t get the chance to ride the massive trends that can go on for months. And transaction costs kill you. Given all my work on TF I don’t see any logic in the short term trading pursuit.

“I trade trends but I never use volume…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your interesting site, which I have visited often for a number of years.

I have read the book “Humphrey Bancroft Neill: Tape Reading and Market Tactics” from your site.

My question is just, why is this book relevant for trend following? The book talks mostly about volume. I trade trends but I never use volume for determining my trades.

I also saw that you previously have answered a feedback on volume with the following link.

Regards,
Kim

Trend following is not about volume indicators.

“Jerry Parker completely contradicts this by saying the Turtles were trading four different systems…”

Feedback in:

I recently listened to an interview with Jerry Parker (link). In the first part of the talk, a listener asks a question for Jerry and Niels Kastrup Larsen. It’s about pyramiding … I have Curtis Faith’s book “Way of the Turtle” in both of those sources they do describe a method of adding to winning trades based on price quickly hitting certain profit amounts. But Jerry Parker completely contradicts this by saying the Turtles were trading four different systems. Each with their own “X” day breakout entry criteria which is not really pyramiding at all in the common sense of the word. So my question is simply which version is correct? Or did the system mechanics change over time? Since you are recognized as a leading authority on the Turtles, I thought that you would be a good person to ask. I look forward to hearing your reply.

Thanks,
A.L.

A few things:

— Parker was the most successful Turtle. Period.

— Faith? You may want to read my book on the Turtles. He’s not a useful voice.

The Turtles had different length systems and had pyramids. They also had discretion to pick parameters they would follow consistently, as long as within the system rules.
