“My experience has been with stocks, mostly long, but I would like to learn to short as well as diversify into other markets…”

Feedback in:

I retired first of this year, so living the essay life right now. I’d like to be involved with the Markets, but more or less as a hobby (and more profitable than my Beekeeping hobby). I don’t want to be tied to my computer everyday, hopping in and out of trades. I’ve looked at Nick Radge’s weekend trend trade strategy and I do like the approach. My experience has been with Stocks, mostly long, but I would like to learn to short as well as diversify into other markets. Also want to learn how to backtest. I did a good bit of programming in the past, so I think I can pick it up without too much of a struggle. Once this Virus has passed, my wife and I would like to do some traveling and maybe spend part of the winters in friendlier climates. My interest in trading isn’t about getting rich, however, my intention is to be successful and make some money. We are debt-free and have a fair-sized nest egg, and we are currently living off of my pension and social security without having to draw down my IRA’s. I want to do it because I enjoy it; I have always enjoyed dabbling in the market. I’ve been trading, off and on, for probably 20 years, and I’ve finally realized that I need some type of “systematic” approach.

Sorry to be so long winded.

thanks,
Mike

Nancy Upton and Don Sexton pinpointed the traits possessed by entrepreneurs:

1. Nonconformists: lower need to conform indicating self-reliance.

“I have been a novice stock trader for the past 2 years. Intuitively, I have become a follower of trends…”

Feedback in:

Dear Michael Covel,

Today I came upon a 2007 copy of your classic book on Trend Following. I was wondering whether or not your directives or the financial world have changed sufficiently over the past 13 years so that my study of this book could be misleading? Otherwise, I would like to start with this book and follow up with the newer edition when it is safe again (post-Covid) to visit a library. I have been a novice stock trader for the past 2 years. Intuitively, I have become a follower of trends. I look forward to learning from your writing how to hone my skills. Thank you for your generous sharing of information on the fascinating endeavor of trading.

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

J. A.

I write my books to be timeless.

“Thank you so much for your work bringing these winning strategies to life for a broader audience…”

Feedback in:

Michael,

First, thank you so much for your work bringing these winning strategies to life for a broader audience. I really enjoyed your Trend Following (audio) book. This year I just bailed from my buy/hold/rebalance plan during the crash, and painfully realized that I can’t predict the future as I waited for the bear market to resume. A big believer in Kahneman and market behavior and Mandelbrot/Taleb, I realize I need to just trust numbers and get my emotions out of it. 2 questions: Could you share the video you mention on your site? For those of us not ready to pull the trigger on a $3k course, are there other books/sites/resources you recommend for getting into the down-and-dirty details of entry/exit, portfolio/risk management, etc.? Thank you for educating us. I want to break free from the passive investing buy/hold/rebalance dogma that seems at risk of underperforming in the upcoming decades. Thanks much!

Video sent. I recommend my world. There’s enough there

“My current problem is knowing what stocks to invest in both short term and long term…”

Feedback in:

Hey Michael! my current problem is knowing what stocks to invest in both short term and long term, and I’m not sure what broker to use.

You need a system. That’s more than you think. You need:

• Exact rules for selecting your tracking portfolio.
• Exact rules for entering your trades at the right time.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a loss.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a profit.
• Exact rules for how much money to bet on each trade.

“As a relatively new trader, most of my challenges stem from the “being right” problem…”

Feedback in:

As a relatively new trader, most of my challenges stem from the “being right” problems closely followed by the “hold and hope”. Since these experiments have failed i have obviously been looking into changing something or a group of somethings because I don’t want to be insane. I saw you give a presentation during a [name] video and started digging into your website to learn more about what you have available. Additionally the other challenge I face is finding the plays for the day or swings due to my small account size. Once in plays there are opportunities that I bail out of probably due to not assessing correctly which lends to another challenge, how far do I let something go before its no longer salvageable.

There’s a lot going on in your comments — all not good. A nice start? Here.
