“The biggest challenge is where to start and how to do it…”

Hi Michael,

I’m new to trading, so for me, the biggest challenge is where to start and how to do it! What type of investing/trading should I be doing? I am certainly a believer in long-term investing, as I put money that I have saved into mutual funds/ETFs. But for trading, what blend of analysis is effective and will earn the greatest returns while properly managing risk. Fundamental analysis, technical analysis, value investing, momentum trading, etc. It is a lot for me to take in. I know how to block out large media company articles and news channel advise, but sometimes I get sucked into Twitter and Medium blog posts. Alas, though, I just finished The Complete TurtleTrader and I am so excited at the thought of Trend Following. I am very logical and mathematical, so I love the idea of a system that I can follow. One that doesn’t rely on trusting your gut, interpreting every rising wedge on decreasing volume (or whatever), or buying or selling the news, but a system that has rules that you should not deviate from and THAT HAS PROVEN RESULTS. This is something I can get on board with. I truly enjoyed The Complete TurtleTrader, and your book Trend Following is already in the mail. Thank you so much for your writings.

Firstly I would like to say I admire your work, and appreciate all the good content you provide on all your platforms. My biggest challenge was changing my beliefs about the market. I often over-complicated trading and convinced myself that it was a very complex task which only individuals with insider knowledge or an innate ability to trade could be Successful in, However, it Dawned upon me after the study and application of trend following principles, that trading success starts with your beliefs and the more simple your strategy the better.
