“What should my expectations be after completing your program…”

Feedback in:

Michael,

I am interested in your program. I do have some concerns because of past experiences with other programs where it seems I always learn something but not a complete system. What should my expectations be after completing your program?

Thanks,
Mike B.

I said this before, but it’s important. You need:

• Exact rules for selecting your tracking portfolio.
• Exact rules for entering your trades at the right time.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a loss.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a profit.
• Exact rules for how much money to bet on each trade.

You will have that. Plus you will have historical context for confidence. And a strong psychological foundation. Then it’s time for trend following performance.

My guest today is Paul Mulvaney, known as the trend following trader who made over 100 percent in 2008. He graduated from Manchester University in 1985 with a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science & Mathematics. He completed the one-year Management Science program at Imperial College, London in 1986, earning an MSc with Distinction. The focus of his Master’s thesis was computerized arbitrage models for interest and exchange rate trading. After university, Paul held posts in derivatives and foreign exchange trading at Midland Montagu, Bankers Trust Company and NatWest Markets before joining Merrill Lynch in September 1993. At Merrill Lynch, he managed several of the firm’s major options portfolios, including Global Foreign Exchange Options and Exotic Commodity Options. Paul left Merrill Lynch in 1999 and then founded Mulvaney Capital.

The topic is Trend Following.

“Could you point me in the direction of some simple long term trend following…”

Feedback in:

Good day Michael,

I read your original Trend Following book over Christmas break, really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I’ve started listening to your podcast a couple of months ago, also really enjoying your content. Keep up the good work!

Now I’m writing you because I’d like to allocate a small chunk of my tax free trading account (Canada) to just trend following.

In your book, you mention some pretty simple formulas. One that is doable on the back of an envelope if I recall correctly? Could you point me in the direction of some simple long term trend following formulas or strategies that would work well on stocks traded on the TSX?

Thanks,
Martin K.

Once you understand TF it’s simple. There are also sample TF systems across my books too, but my courses get clients *there* faster.

“My main problem is buying overbought resistant levels…”

Feedback in:

My main problem [on trading] is buying overbought resistant levels and support levels. Placing buy stops and sell stops, most of the time the target never gets hit but winds up moving down to my sell stop and I lose on that trade even after adjusting my sell stop. I have your book Trend Trading but it is mostly based on Coding or AI trading. I don’t do that.

Dwain J.

Trend following is not AI trading — whatever AI trading is. Overbought resistant levels and support levels? Stop that ASAP.

“To learn as much as possible in the spare time I have from my demanding job…”

Feedback in:

[My biggest challenge in trading] is being prepared to transition from a full-time executive to full-time trader.

Mario M.

What is your strategy and time frame now?

Thanks Mike for the response. I really didn’t expect any follow-up on your side and thought your initial question was a kind of AI response.

Short answer:
1. When I save/make USD 3M (total net worth)
2. When I become consistently profitable trading this size (2M at least).
3. I initially thought 2028 would be an achievable timeframe.

Long answer/comments:
1. The pandemic has taught me I can live anywhere and work remotely.
2. Instead of my current job as a Country General Manager for an S&P500 health/tech company, I think I can make a living from trading/investing.
3. I’m a corporate executive with a solid general management career making six-figure compensation. I just think I can be successful if I learn the ropes of trading, reading your book, Trend Following, was inspiring in that sense that trading is learnable.
4. I started investing in stock market on Feb 22, and have experienced what for me is significant unrealized losses. My investing account is down 50% because I hear and followed dangerous “investing commonly accepted advice” like “buy more if the stock is down”. I’ve bought 8 lots of stock that now is 50% lower than my last lot. Hahaha. Would have shorted if I knew more about trend following.
5. It’s really hard to identify good material over the internet, etc. because there are tons of noise like YouTubers, books, etc. I just discovered about trend following one year after being interested in the stock maker, making a “Value Investing Course” at Columbia University, etc.
6. I initially thought trading/investing was easy. I then discover that a lot of what you hear is not good advice and the trends are really powerful.
7. I’m on my way trying to learn as much as possible in the spare time I have from my demanding job.

Anyway, thanks for the response, and whenever you have any surveys, research projects, etc., please count on me.

On the trading side, you need a system. Start with my FAQs below.

“Your books occupy the best corner of my bookshelf…”

Feedback in:

Hey Mike,

Just came back from a quick run listening to your latest podcast with Larry Hite. I’ve been following your work since 2012 so listening to you and Larry feels to me like a chat with old friends. Your books occupy the best corner of my bookshelf.

Anyway, just wanted to say thank you. It’s so rare these days to hear an honest conversation and one that isn’t filtered by wokeness and the fear to be canceled.

Also, on the topic, a great guest for your show could be Konstantin Kissin. Not sure if you’ve come across him in the past but if not, have a listen to his Oxford Union speech on woke culture vs. rational argument. He’s written a book about it too. I think you guys would have an awesome discussion.

Keep up the great work.

Thx!
