“My biggest challenge has been a wash of over/under confidence flowing…”

Feedback in:

Michael,

My biggest challenge has been a wash of over/under confidence flowing in waves on various entry points, even if I believe my research (and gut) was correct on a particular trade. Years ago I got wiped out on multiple positions related to Amazon calls when the stock was trading in the $400.00 to $420.00 range: I was overconfident. The stock retraced and I could not get out of the positions. The following week the stock began its soar, but I was not in a mood or position to do anything about it. I have not really traded since that time. Sure I have invested a little bit here and a little bit there, but I have not actually traded.

I was speaking to a former/retired broker that I was friendly with in May of 2020 and he was discussing his “dirty bidding” on mining shares for mostly penny offerings. Honestly, I was not really paying attention to any markets and thought, “Well I can at least take a look, maybe do a little research and see what is new”. After a review of the metals, I asked the friend if he had access to the LME because it looked to me that nickel was going to rise steadily based on renewed demand from China. He did not have access through his broker and I was too under-confident to take action. The rest as they say is history, although I was advising that 25 or 26 would be the top, which we now know I was wrong on.

So, emotion seems to be a tough one for me once a position is on. Funny as I am typing this, I reflect back on your podcast with Mr. Ed Seykota and how much he has worked to take emotion out of that mix. At the time when I was trading actively, I was even working on emotion with Mr. Michael Martin, however, we were sort of a mismatched pair. Please do not get me wrong, I like Michael and deeply respect him, however, we just had a different way of viewing things.

What I am seeking from TurtleTrader is to review some of what I already know, learn a new methodology that systematizes my actions in a way that may keep emotions in “check”, and have some fun in the process. When I last traded more actively, I had taken the fun out of my own process and thought I needed to “get serious” with all of these nonsensical actions on my own part. My work mimicked what I thought serious traders needed to do, rather than trusting my own common sense and (personal) way forward. After I saw nickel move in the direction that I thought it would, I began doing some paper trading again at the end of last year, I started listening to your Turtle Trader text. With the eclectic group of individuals that made up the “Turtles”, I found freedom from my preconceived notions of what a trader is supposed to be.

I hope this message conveys an answer to your question.

All my best,
Brian

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.

“All of your comments about day trading of any kind are true…”

Feedback in:

Well Mr. Covel this is even better, to say the very least. All of your comments about day trading of any kind are true. Not only does it take up more of a persons precious time but it is far more stressful to have “tick fever” all day and losing complete control of very valuable time frames that allow at least some kind of organized perspective on what is happening in any given market. I am in the midst of a rather important project in our company at this time but very shortly I will be back. Thank you so much for your good work and love of our still free markets.

Respectfully,
Robert W.

Welcome!

Haven’t traded before, just getting started and checking things out. I had some problems with the registration and couldn’t watch the video. How crucial is it? I prefer reading to watching videos when possible, is there a transcript somewhere?

Regards,
Mike P.

No transcript of that video. I have plenty of written books + courses though. Start with my FAQS below.

“I consistently make a conscious effort to avoid things that raise my stress levels…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael,

I hope you are doing well. It has been a couple of years since I last wrote to you so I’m glad to take this opportunity to write again after listening to your recent podcast episode with Dwayne Bryant.

I retired [number] years ago from the Chicago Police Department after 30 years of service. I think I did a good job coping with the stresses that came with the wide variety of experiences I dealt with over that length of time, although it has taken a mental toll on me to some degree. I consistently make a conscious effort to avoid things that raise my stress levels. That’s why, when I saw your podcast episode with Dwayne Bryant, I considered just skipping and deleting it in order to avoid what seemed likely to be a discussion that would elevate my stress. After doing some rudimentary research on Mr. Bryant my needle moved even further in the direction of just moving on to the Tom Basso interview.

But because I’ve studied your work and followed you since I began trading 12 years ago, I’ve come to know you as someone I can count on to be objective, so I chose to listen. I was not disappointed. I detected the points in the conversation you obviously had in mind when you referenced propaganda and appreciated your push-back when, like you, I thought it was justified, however taken as a whole I thought you and Mr. Bryant both had a good, open-minded conversation. Most topics I agreed with, some not so much, but it was a mutually respectful and civil conversation not conducted in an echo chamber. I felt as if I happened to be at a gathering sitting next to both of you hearing you talk I could join in and contribute my unique perspective without diminishing the respect or civility of the discussion from any of us. For me, considering my professional background, I think that’s a testament to your talent and ability to do what you do so well.

Your podcast has evolved into so much more than what it started out being, and I’m thankful for that. I derive a great deal of value from the content you produce because it’s consistently entertaining and always makes me think. Thank you, sir!

My offer still stands if you’re ever in [name] or [name] it would be my pleasure to join up with you for dinner. The stories I could tell you, brother.

I’ll leave you with one off the top of my head since I was just reminded of it. You may find it amusing.

I was working a side job as security for a Marilyn Manson show at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago in [date] or [date]. I was outside of the theatre by the entrance with my partner ahead of the show when [name], Manson’s lead guitarist at the time, walked out and stood next to us. He had a cap on, no makeup, and was wearing ordinary street clothes. Small, skinny person. No one in the crowd recognized him. He stood there blankly surveying the crowd of every goth-looking freak and weirdo you might imagine showing up for a Marilyn Manson concert, covered in leather, spikes, chains, tattoos, garish makeup, etc. After a good, long look, [name] said to us, “I wear makeup and a costume to play on stage for a few hours because I get paid. These people…..they actually LIVE like this 24 hours a day for free. My God.”

It was a unique look at image vs reality. Made me wonder just how many larger-than-life personas out there are really just paycheck players.

Thanks again, Michael. Please keep this confidential, or at least anonymous, if you would.

Sincerely,
[name]
