I ran what was essentially a friends and family CTA (i.e. trend following) for almost eight years. I traded a systematic trend following strategy, but it wasn’t automated so I was actually entering the trades manually and then exiting with stops. My biggest challenge was overriding entry signals and not taking every trade. As a result, I missed some huge opportunities. We had a decent run, with a positive cumulative return during the period I traded client money. However, I left a lot on the table because of the “discretion” I allowed to creep into my system.

Trend following without following the rules is not trend following.

She serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California–Davis and postdoctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University. I think that my biggest challenge I have faced with my previous trading is:

• Lack of consistent results and experiencing.
• Loss after loss after loss after loss (I have literally lost 20+ trades of the bounce at times) and the demoralizing effect this can have on your confidence.
• Not having a proper plan/strategy.
• Only trading on the lower time frames.

I hate my day job so so much and in effects my decision making skills in other life areas including trading. I am motivated to learn to trade greatly because of the hatred of my day job, however it is a double sided coin as my decision making is effected by my job as well. I have read your TurtleTrader book and enjoyed it.

Hi Michael, hope all is well. I’ve been working to get into a trading role for 4 years and have finally done that starting November 1st. The biggest challenge I faced was having experience, but took an unconventional path to get into a role that will give me experience. Hi Michael,

For long I wanted to express how I was grateful for your work and your podcast, how you indirectly helped me in hard market time to keep faith and not diverge from my process (I m a portfolio manager), listening your podcast on my bike to work. So thank you! On covid as we seem to share many doubts…I used my frustration about lockdowns, school closed and helicopter money and dig into data and did several studies on the cost-benefit of non-differentiate lockdowns notably:

• My work trying to count the indirect deaths/costs of lockdowns was published in LeFigaro newspaper in France, fueling many hate / love comments
• On conditions of the covid deaths, only Italy and its Istituto Superiore di Sanità publishes serious statistics on that. You’ll spot that it’s not 1 condition (say obesity) but 3.5 conditions that the deads of covid suffered, on average. We estimated the average life expectancy of the deaths at less than 4 years (validated by the epidemiologists I worked with).
• I built a website with many comparative and alternative statistics, and cost-benefit analyses (social costs, educational cost, QUALY cost, educational cost)
• Finally, your guest Talya Miron Shatz said approx. that there was no big problem as vaccines were free. Here again a serious reasoning dissonance of our times. They are paid by our taxes and may compromise future expenses for education, environment.
