“Am I a trend follower or a bitcoiner…”

Hi Michael,

Your work so far has been incredible and has completely transformed my perspective on the financial market. I’ve transitioned from being a former investment advisor to managing my own money and that of my family.

At the beginning of 2023, I made a routine purchase of BTCUSD, and since then, I’ve been studying the currency more and more (living in an emerging market, you know how politics and the economy can be) while riding a promising wave. Just as I spent 4–5 years immersing myself in books, papers, and the teachings of trend-following managers, I’ve spent the last two years delving into BTCUSD.

I must admit, I’ve found many similarities between the reasons that “create” a trend follower and those that “create” a bitcoiner. When faced with the question, “Am I a trend follower or a bitcoiner?” My answer is: I’m a bitcoiner because I’m a trend follower. Therefore, when it comes time to make a decision, I’ll follow my boss (he’s humble, straightforward, very objective, and doesn’t get me into trouble).

Below is a photo of the future trend followers—or at the very least, of those who will reap many of the benefits of trend following.

I read and thoroughly enjoyed your Trend Following and Complete TurtleTrader books, and appreciated the efforts taken to discuss how Trend Following, in one form or another, has been around for centuries.

That said, do you know if trend following works as well today as it has historically? I’m asking because I’m beginning an algo trading course that’s focused on extensive backtesting, and it was mentioned that Trend Following does not work as well as it once did. I will find out after backtesting, but would like your perspective.

I am glad to be in your inbox, and thank you so much for letting me in. I am a newbie in forex trading. So far as a newbie, practicing with the demo account, I have been making profits all day, but my challenge is, I don’t really know how to analyze the market using the technical and fundamental analysis. What I do is, I just select the pairs I want to trade, go to trading view to look at them, [and] just make my predictions. I really, really want to know how to do analysis, using the technical and fundamental analysis. Thank you so much.

My biggest challenge [on trading] is fear. I know that I can do it. Aside from fear, my biggest challenge is dedication. I’ve been studying chart patterns and rules on and off over the years thinking that it’s right for me, and then it’s not right for me, but I keep being drawn back to the markets for some odd reason. It might be FOMO. It may be the money that keeps drawing me back. I’ve always been fascinated by Wall Street and the exchanges.
