I greatly enjoy your podcasts and your books. Planning to add trend trading as a second enterprise as soon as I feel comfortable with the process and have practiced a year. We raise cattle and beef for a living and a little crop farming. Have a degree in ag econ and finance and understand the mechanics of the trading. Have a good understanding of the market psychology so understand what you are talking about. Love your approach but don’t fully have it as second nature. We are very busy building final infrastructure on our family land. We moved back several years ago so we can handle 1,000 plus head of cattle easily with one responsible employee. Trade daily in the cash market swapping overvalued animals for undervalued animals (glad to share that process I think you’d get a kick out of it, its so easy a smart person can’t figure it out), we have 25 years experience buying cheap feed (not because of quality, due to timing. Inverse of selling strategies) fun stuff. We then turn this feed and our proprietary managed pasture into cattle gain. [We are] almost done and that will leave me the time (plus I’ll be bored after our systematization is complete) needed to develop our trend trading strategy. 51 yrs old. What do you recommend as the path to create trade monitoring systems, who to set up accounts with? Process to get comfortable and make the system second nature before using real capital (when the real learning begins). I want my ducks in a row. Open to all your suggestions. Nuts and bolts, monitoring record keeping etc. Hope to be able to travel more and it appears we can use this process from a computer from anywhere.

Hi Michael,
I back tested a version of Donchian channel trading with parameters 20/20 weekly (only going long) on some Brazilian stocks, mid caps.
I ended up loosing (in the test) during all 2018 and was told that I needed to be comfortable with that. While I know that not every trade might be a winner, I believe the majority should be, at least 60%. For me it’s not acceptable to lose a whole year which was a bad performing year. A system must work in up- and downwards markets which this system naturally doesn’t (it only goes long).
I have not yet found a system that provides positive returns on a regular basis. This is my challenge.

Thanks for your short assessment. Point 2, I understand fully. To bet on Brazilian stocks only is silly as they tend to go quite uniformly, right? Point 1, I do not understand. As I read, Turtle, the original, is [this wise?].

Hey Michael,
I hope this actually gets through to you. I just finished the Trend Following book and was completely blown away. I am a total newbie and am riding with training wheels right now but I think I’ve taken a big step in the right direction by reading your book and following your material. I’d say my biggest challenge is getting started. I am a brand new retail trader and don’t have any mentors or one on one coaching readily available to me. I’m reading every trading book I can get my hands on and researching every other resource I can find. I know I need to be as systematic in my approach as possible. I haven’t experimented with many actual trades but I did go through the beginner’s luck phase before reality made itself known and I gave it all back and then some. I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m looking forward to continuing my study, developing a system, testing it, and getting rolling. Until then I’m organically growing my account and taking a few paper trades every week.

Hello, good morning.
My name is [Name], I’m a 20 year old English teacher and gastronome in Brazil. I live in a small town called Americana, located on the country side of the state of São Paulo.
I’m not quite experienced in the market yet. I have been investing my money in some assets we have around here for about 3 years, but this is actually my first month trading in the stock market (here in Brazil we call it the Bovespa/B3).
The biggest challenge I have today is finding different information and distinct paths I could follow. Every piece of information I get to put my hands on says the same things: buy low, sell high. Buy and hold. Do the same things Warren Buffet did and you shall have plenty.
Your book was the first that I saw that had something different to say. Something new.
I don’t have a mentor or a kind of finances guide, somebody to teach me and lead me towards the light side (or the money side for that matter). All I have is me and my will to learn.
My hope is to become a better investor and a better trader. Day by day. And maybe someday be successful in getting out of this 3rd world country and only working if I want to and in what I want to. To make the money work for me and not me for it.
