Hello Sir,

I have been on about a 20 month journey of becoming financially literate and learning about investing and trading. I did my first trades (options – bull put spreads and bear call spreads) using what I learned from a guy named Phil Town and his Rule 1 course, but I stopped when I thought I needed to learn more. Since then, each next step has seemed to present itself as I finished a certain section of learning. The last 5 months have been all about working on my psychology using Van Tharp’s books and his Peak Performers home study course. His course taught be about my trading style and showed me that I needed to be out of the market, so I got out. His book also taught me that my style fits more with the Trend Following style of trading than any of the others, including Value investing/trading. Your Trend Following book presented itself to me a few weeks ago. I’m almost finished with the book, and I’ve been gaining more and more confidence by listening to your podcasts and going through your materials. Right now, my biggest challenge is on the technical aspect of developing a trading system, but from what I’m reading on your website, you seem have the answer to that in your Flagship course. I’ve gone from an overview level and am now getting into the specialized area of how I will go about becoming a successful financial free investor-trader. I’m watching your 55 minute video now as well.

Chris B.

I am actually thinking of switching to trend following that’s why I’ve been searching about it and your book came up. I came across your website and subscribe to it. From the things I’ve gathered I am convinced that I should try out building a Trend following system, but I will still need time to do it. I need to schedule everything.

Dear Michael, I am very interested in your Trend Following concept. I just bought your book, Trend Following. I have two small accounts of $3000 and $10,000 I plan to use to follow your concepts. Are these big enough accounts to use your rules on Trend Following?

Thank you,
Mark

My guest today is Vitaliy Katsenelson, CFA, the Chief Investment Officer at Investment Management Associates. He speaks frequently to investment groups around the world, and was most recently profiled in Barron’s. Previously, he was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado Graduate School of Business, and he is also the author of Active Value Investing.

“There are two types of technical analysis ‘reactive’ and ‘predictive’ TA…”

Technical Analysis of Stock Trends
Technical Analysis of Stock Trends

Feedback in:

I purchased a report BEFORE somebody actually explained to me that predictive TA is a farce and now I don’t use them to make decisions anymore. I am now thoroughly in the reactive TA camp (EMA / SMA crosses and classic trend lines). Thanks to you I finally realize that there is another area of TA and that there’s nothing wrong w/ late signal entry. Below is an Amazon Review of Edward’s and Mcgee’s “Technical Analysis of Stock Trends” where I mention you and your podcast. I agree w/ the lower rating reviews in that an older edition may be better than the newer versions of this book. I own the 6th revision and there are some newer charts (1980’s), but I would rather have an older version w/ charts closer to the original release. Reason being is that market movements in my mind haven’t change. Markets move up, down and sideways. Markets trend, consolidate, continue to trend in the same direction, consolidate, reverse the trend, repeat. Also, there are two types of technical analysis “reactive” and “predictive” TA and I fall into the camp that predicting the future is impossible so I’ve decided focus on reactive TA and learn to monitor price action using classical charting. I think Dr. Elder (author of Trading for a Living) said, “don’t have an opinion of the market, let the market tell you what it’s going to do.” Thanks to Michael Covel (author of “Trend Following”) who’s podcast opened my eyes to these two TA concepts. I’m listening to all your podcasts and it was #145 that prompted me to write a Thank You.

Sincerely,
Daniel C.

Thanks for the nice words.

Ep. 805: Allison Schrager Interview with Michael Covel on Trend Following Radio

My guest today is Allison Schrager, an economist, journalist at Quartz, and co-founder of LifeCycle Finance Partners, LLC, a risk advisory firm. Allison diversified her career by working in finance, policy, and media. She led retirement product innovation at Dimensional Fund Advisors and consulted to international organizations, including the OECD and IMF.

The topic is her book An Economist Walks into a Brothel: And Other Unexpected Places to Understand Risk.

In this episode of Trend Following Radio we discuss:

  • Schrager equips readers with five principles for dealing with risk, principles used by some of the world’s most interesting risk takers. For instance, she interviews a professional poker player about how to stay rational when the stakes are high, a paparazzo in Manhattan about how to spot different kinds of risk, horse breeders in Kentucky about how to diversify risk and minimize losses, and a war general who led troops in Iraq about how to prepare for what we don’t see coming.

When I started reading your 2017 Trend Following book I knew right away that it would change my life…”

Feedback in:

Michael!

When I started reading your 2017 Trend Following book I knew right away that it would change my life in only the way that books like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, The Blue Cliff Record, and The Black Swan by Taleb could. It`s the way you write. It`s all the quotes in the margins (I took the time to translate the Chinese on page xx with a dictionary).

I read up to page 44 and then the guy who lent me the book had to take it back because he was transferring. I`m writing to you from a federal prison (sorry). I need to read the rest of your book! I need to read The Winton Papers! You mention all kinds of people I’ve never heard of before when reading Barron`s or Bloomberg Businessweek. All of this strikes bells in my head because I`m a little on the spectrum and can detect patterns in all kinds of things better than most people (though I can`t tell when people are kidding). I play 20 instruments (I still have things online that I could link you to).

My parents never had anything and I started out poor, they divorced, I moved around in the custody wars then ended up living with my rich banker uncle on Long Island (I grew up in [name]) who started a bank that was bought by Bank of America. I was exposed to currency trading and I figured out a recursion loop by hedging 3 pairs of currencies against one another. Then I got locked up (though not for financial crimes).

I made a really, really stupid decision which I regret and since it is a part of my history I cannot deny it, must be honest about it and not let it stoop me from succeeding in all my goals that I can reasonably achieve. I teach entrepreneurship here (I am part of [name] in Manhattan), and I am a Faith Group Representative here (Zen Buddhism). I`m studying Taleb`s Dynamic Hedging which someone here was kind enough to get me a copy of before they left a year ago (I`m working on getting the big money!)

I design and hand draw all my own sheets and charts for all the financial data that I clinically dissect. EVERYTHING THAT I EUREKA UPON IS TREND MOVEMENTS!

I appreciate you taking the time to read this.
Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Tom

Best of luck!

“OK, Michael. You asked for it. My biggest challenge is the learning curve, and that time commitment…”

Feedback in:

OK, Michael. You asked for it. My biggest challenge is the learning curve, and that time commitment. Background information: I’m a physician, approaching 70, still in part-time practice, and quite active. Since around 2008 I’ve taken more interest in my life savings, and tried to learn how to better manage my investments. It’s not been a disaster but I’ve not done that well. Yet I’ve spent, literally, tens of thousands of dollars, read some 20+ books, subscribed to newsletters, tried investment advisors, spent endless hours looking at charts, balance sheets, company profiles and analysts’ reports to get this far. Fortunately, through [name][ membership, I recently ran across your presentation last year at their meetings and listened to it. I’ve been learning about you since. I’m just finishing up your book Trend Following and now have discovered your websites and Flagship course. And I just finished reading through most of your trend following website. I tend to be an independent thinker. I’m an anarcho-capitalist. I have a couple of patents to my name and am trying to monetize them by starting a business. I’m regularly reading 10+ investment newsletter advisors every day. I’m using [name] for entry and exits. So it feels like I’m already juggling a few balls in the air as is. Somehow it never registered to me that many of the famous traders I’ve read about and admired like Paul Tudor Jones, Ed Seykota, Bill Dunn, Tom Basso and George Soros were all trend followers and trend traders. Going through your book and the website, it looks to me that if I sign up for your Flagship product, I will be committing to a solid month to 3 months of dedicated learning and study to implement a personalized system of investment using trend following. Don’t get me wrong. I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE THAT TREND FOLLOWING WORKS. But I do realize that stops, risk management, capital management and dedicated systematic attention to detail will be the fundamental requirements to any success with this kind of system. But I honestly wonder if I have the time that I can commit to developing and running this kind of system. Will I be able to juggle this along with all those other things I have going? I wonder if I would be better off placing a percentage of my capital with a manager like Dunn Capital Management (or maybe somebody else?), and focus my efforts with the remainder of my capital doing long equity trading with my existing investment advisors. But maybe you’re going to tell me that I should make the effort to learn trend following through your Flagship product, not only to do my own trend following trading, but because you also feel it will help me with my long equity trades in the remainder of my portfolio. Time is the one commodity that becomes more precious to us every day we get older. I’d be pleased to hear what thoughts you might have regarding this conundrum.
