Can’t Argue the Facts

Hey Mike!

Just a quick one to say thanks for your podcast and your work. Just finished your book and have been listening to your podcast for about 6 months now. I’ve been studying in a share trading diploma here in Australia to get me started but as I’ve progressed I’ve noticed so many holes in the theories surrounding market timing in particular. I haven’t been content to just assume these methods work.

I’m a huge Oakland A’s fan and I’m a big sabermetrics guy. Trend Following looked like the most logical method of trading to me, but once you compared it to baseball it concreted it in my mind. It’s logical! You can’t argue a point (very well) with qualitative data. In my mind that applies to everything in life…. so why not trading?

Dear Mr. Covel, Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my emails in the past. I admire you and what you do. Thank you for the wealth of education and the opportunity to dive deep into the world of trend following.

I would enjoy the opportunity to gain lots of experience in the world of trend following. I would like to explore the opportunity of offering my employment services free of charge to anyone (yourself included) who could benefit from the services of a young, ambitious, intelligent and entrepreneurial spirit.

My family’s life needs a change. We are a young family of 5 with a 7, 2 and 5 month old. My wife and I have discussed this at length, and I am ready to put in 24 hr days anywhere in the world. I have been an entrepreneur all my life. I am not scared to work. I am willing to relocate if you would agree that any opportunity presenting itself warrants it, or work remotely on any endeavour where I can gain more knowledge and some first hand experience.

I am sure this is not the first email of this type that you have received. But mark my words, I am willing to give my all to anyone who needs assistance and help them make a lot of money!

There Is Only One Turtle Story

How do you make it on Wall Street? Some feedback:

Dear Mr. Covel, My name is [Name] and I just finished reading “The Complete TurtleTrader” for the second time. I recently graduated college as a psychology major but I am determined to work in the finance/investment world. Therefore, two quotes from page 15 and 16 really spoke to me:

“I think it’s far more important to know what Freud thinks about death wishes than what Milton Friedman thinks about deficit spending.” “Go down to Wall Street today after work with the hot-shot traders all earning $500,000 a year at the big banks and you’ll find very few who talk about Freud being the ticket to making millions.”

I’m writing this email to get your advice. I’ve applied to many big investment firms and haven’t even gotten a call back. I’ve even applied to Vanguard as a lowly Client Relationship specialist just to get my foot in the door. I did get a call back from them, but it’s been two months.

How can I secure the career I desire? It seems as if nobody recognizes the importance of psychology in finance. I’ve read well over 100 investment books in the past two years, I’ve beaten the market and I’ve even started an investment/personal finance website. I’ve included this in my cover letters and there’s STILL nothing. Right now I plan to go at it on my own and take my Series 65 soon, but I wonder if there’s a better way.

Because your work really affected me and it seems as if you (and Richard Dennis) understand how I feel, what should I do?

But you missed a big issue. The role of entrepreneur in investing, trading. Trading has a few stories of working for someone else, but the real way to freedom and success in the space is DIY. I would recommend a non-trading book: Linchpin by Seth Godin. 50 pages in I suspect you might see the flaw in your pursuit.

Trend Following Is Entrepreneurial By Definition

Michael, I was just listening to your podcast with Jon Boorman and it was so fitting. I had just connected with Jerry Parker on LinkedIn and was in the middle of contacting him about getting some feedback for someone just starting out. I’d love to get some feedback from you too. I would love to find a business partner who could put up the capital while I put in the “sweat equity”. I want to do my research and develop my system and eventually start my own fund/CTA/RIA. I would, if course, be splitting my fees with my business partner. First, does that sound like a reasonable way to go about getting started. Second, how do I go about making that proposition appealing to potential partners? My goal is to one day be interviewed on your podcast as someone who has been successful in trend following and to give back to the trend following community as Jerry Parker seems to be doing.

Trend Following Mentoring Works

I hope you are doing well on your journey. It has been a long time since we touched base. I have been incredibly busy to say the least, but at least I would say busy in a good way. I consider you one of my earliest mentors through your work that I have reviewed extensively. I will say that I have traveled some distance since that first introduction and continue to conduct rigorous research into the marriage between math/science and market mechanics. 2014 has been a very revealing year for me. I have realized a net ROI of approximately 80% in my retail futures account with a max drawdown of approximately 27%. I do not take this startup success for granted. My research has revealed that different market environments flatter different approaches. September-December has been interesting with the infusion of volatility into the markets benefiting my strategic and tactical approaches. I am also expanding on my arsenal of computer programming abilities as that is the language of mathematics in our day and age and essential for my further development as a market speculator. In 12 to 18 months I look forward to starting my own quant fund. I am enjoying this journey so much that I think this will likely become one of my life long endeavors. I wish you all the best and thank you for your immense contribution to my development as a trader. I look forward to speaking with you further when I am at a certain stage of my development as a money manager and perhaps meeting you in person one day as well.
