“I got caught up in over trading and I’m mostly recovered by now…”

Feedback in:

[Biggest challenge in trading] I got caught up in over trading and I’m mostly recovered by now.

I discovered the trend following concepts by myself as a consequence of my background in pattern recognition and feature extraction of details in music — I discovered what makes music swing for my masters thesis research, wanting to play Brasilian music authentically.

I’m constantly looking for new and better info about markets and trading. Turtles came onto my radar a few years ago but I only recently looked into it thanks to ThriftBooks suggestions.

I’m looking forward to an interesting connection with you.

Thanks.

Ken L.

My biggest challenge [in trading] is selling winners too soon.

Anthony

What is your trading strategy and time frame as of now?

My main strategy has been momentum day and swing trading small cap stocks with low floats experiencing high relative volume.

I closed 2022 and 2023 with losses of about 2k each year so I’ve taken a break from trading serious money until I can be consistently profitable in a simulator and with small amounts of cash.

Most of my losses came from getting in at the top of stocks moving way too fast and most of my gains were quick swing trades, completed in 2-3 days.

Most of my education so far has come from [names]. So I’m still very much a beginner.

I recently bought your main book Trend Following – I really like the simplicity of the trend following approach since it has a lot in common with momentum trading strategies.

Let me be blunt — I would toss your current strategy asap. It’s a dead end. Day trading, a dead end.

Trend following is the path.

“How should I think about sizing my allocation to each…”

Feedback in:

Mike,

I’ve done the research enough to know I want meaningful allocation to trend following as a permanent part of my portfolio, and the most affordable access for retail are the relatively new ETFs (past 5 years, but mostly since the strategy crushed it in 2022 when it was desperately needed to bail out all the 60/40s that didn’t own any).

I currently have starter positions in DBMF, CTA, KMLM, and the two new Jerry Parker funds (TFPN and the less well-publicized MFUT). I am investigating ASMF, AHLT, RSST, and HARD, which include some very differentiated strategies, to say the least. Did I miss any notable tickers?

Assuming I’m building a deeply diversified portfolio including gold, cash, stocks, bonds, and alts, how should I think about sizing my allocation to each? Are there any you dislike and why? Is there one or two you love and why? Jerry is a purist known for a long look back, but which of these (if any) do you see as fast (more reactive, shorter look back)? I see merit in having a mix of faster, medium, and slow trend funds. The fast ones might profit less over time but may reduce my need for long vol/tail risk assets which tend to bleed.

I’ve listened to many episodes of your show and love the ones featuring the people making affordable trend following accessible to the masses, so thank you for putting it out there!

Best,
Dan S.

I primarily help people to understand and trade trend following methods. Allocation questions like yours? There is no set answer, there is no optimal answer and every answer is personal. People have different goals/aspirations.

“How to begin implementing and developing my trading system…”

Feedback in:

Hi Michael,

My name is [name], and I’m reaching out after reading your books “Turtle Trader” and “Trend Following” (I’m about 85% through the latter). I’ve been investing for around 4 years now, which has been quite a journey in itself. However, for several years, I’ve been contemplating transitioning into trading as a way to generate additional profits to further fund my long-term investments.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in getting started with trading is taking that initial step and creating entry rules for myself. I’m also struggling with recognising when a true trend is developing. Despite this, I’m adamant that I need to complete at least 300 practice trades before going live. Yet even getting started with practicing has proven difficult, as I have many ideas swirling in my head but am unsure of where or how to begin implementing and developing my trading system.

So far, I’ve developed the following basic rules for myself:

1. Risk 1 to make 10 – This rule predominantly relates to risk management.
2. Make no more than a maximum of 2 trades per week.
3. ALWAYS use a stop loss.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and any guidance you may have to offer.

Kind regards,
[name] K.

“If many people learn and follow trend following…”

Feedback in:

I’m curious about the indicators used in trend following. If many people learn and follow trend following, do the indicators used in trend following change? Do they lose their effectiveness?

People are irrational. Markets are inefficient. Trends never stop. Trend following is timeless. Zero evidence it’s stopped working because people drive markets, and trend following captures that.
