My guest today is Jack D. Schwager, a recognized industry expert on futures and hedge funds, and the author of the iconic Market Wizards series in which he interviewed many of the trading legends of our time. Previous books in the series include: Market Wizards (1989), The New Market Wizards (1992), Stock Market Wizards (2001), Hedge Fund Market Wizards (2012), and The Little Book of Market Wizards (2014). His most recent book, the revised edition of A Complete Guide to the Futures Markets, was published in January 2017. His other works include Market Sense and Nonsense (2013), Getting Started in Technical Analysis (1999), and the three-volume Schwager on Futures series (1995-96). He is also a Co-founder and Chief Research Officer of FundSeeder, a firm that seeks to find undiscovered trading talent worldwide via its trader platform (FundSeeder.com).

Hope you are doing well.

I am glad to receive your personalized emails which have changed my trading and investing mindset completely. The major shift in my mindset regarding Investing is that of freeing your mind from the attachment which you have with stocks of a particular company in which you have an interest. Now I have realized that following the trend is the ultimate and best trading strategy of all times since it lets you in and out of the stock when the market lets you out and not when you think you should. So, no strings attached to stocks is the major lesson I have learned through your free email course. Hi Michael,

I am reading your trend following book right now and I read the Turtle Traders a few years ago (and loved the story). I am a money manager that manages my own money. I love learning about all different types of styles and of course I find trend following very interesting and want to learn more. I would classify myself as a growth investor that focuses on fundamentals but as I invest more and more I have been beginning to use more and more technical analysis to confirm my opinions, and generally won’t purchase a stock unless the technicals support it. Wanted to shoot you a note to say hello, because it mentions you read all the emails – and in case we ever cross paths. I look forward to finishing Trend Following over the next couple of weeks and imagine I will enjoy it as much as the Turtle Traders.

Be careful with the term “technicals.”

It can mean anything and usually carries the same weight as nothing.

The biggest challenge of trading is to simplify one’s thinking. Trend Following is deceptively simple – that’s it’s challenge, but also it’s beauty. I think Steve Jobs said it best: “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”

I am an artisan and live in the Southern Forests region of Western Australia and have just started learning trading. I have read the ‘Reminiscences of a stock operator’ book and currently half way through the New Trading For A living book and study course by Alexander Elder. Outside of this I listen to your podcast daily which has been very insightful. Thank you.The plan is to continuing studying for a few more months and then paper trade for a couple of months before deciding the way forward.

Hi Michael,

The ‘Take action’ prompt did resonate but it was to do more with the knowledge and training I already have and to maximise the benefit of the money already spent on books (including yours), training and services rather than spending any more until I know where my real shortcomings are. I find that virtually every email I receive is trying to take money out of my pocket with free webinars etc giving half the story and offering some other distraction such as systems and training. I am a committed trend follower and do well when I apply myself but am too easily distracted so am reviewing my portfolio, clearing the losers and those winners that are now going against me and will find new rising stocks to buy. I was lucky in March and jumped on the oil down trend so am currently comfortably up but want to make sure I am focused and ready for the chaos that is likely once the economic impact of covid hits, the final step of Brexit and the US election. I love the podcast and do buy books your guests are promoting, although I prefer audio rather than hard copy.
