Putting Together a System: Do You Have it Right?
Feedback in:
Michael, You may remember me. I bought your course about 3 to 4 years ago and I have read all your books. We have exchanged emails recently. I am a student of Trend Following and I appreciate your blogs/interviews and commentaries. I have never been a real investor in the stock markets. I have dabbled in the markets. I am by no means a techie. I use my iMac computer for word processing, email and the internet. I am now, more or less, retiring from my 37 year career in the shopping center business and I want to keep busy and I believe in Trend Following. I have spoken with Trade Station because it seems that is the best company for Trend Following. I have put together my rules for investing in the following LEAPS options: XLE, XLU, XLB, XLF, XLI, XLK, XLP, XLY, XLV, IEF. I will not hold you responsible for any advice or suggestions but I would appreciate it if you could critique my rules and the above list of ETF’s. I am interviewing Trade Station’s short list of independent recommended programers in Easy Language because I do not have a clue how to enter my rules. I currently use Think Or Swim and an iMac. It seems as though I may need to change to Trade Station and buy a PC notebook computer. Do you feel that is necessary? Are you able to help me or could you recommend some people that could critique my rules, ETF’s and questions?
Thank you,

I don’t detect a trend following approach in your feedback. My take on software. You should also consider a wider take on portfolio diversification.

“Every day I wake up early and KILL IT…”
Feedback in:
Hi Michael,
I’ve been listening to your show, “Trend Following,” for over two years. You asked your listeners to write their story because it inspires you, and I felt moved to do it. I’m 29 years old and have worked in the biotech industry since college. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur but decided to *wait* until I worked in the industry for a while. My rationale was that I’d learn how corporations work from the inside and then I would start a business that replicated what I learned; but the truth is, deep down, I was afraid of failing and feared poverty. Turns out $35,000/year might as well be poverty. I eventually worked my way up from poverty to slavery; comforted by a six-figure income and a promising career. It was a good “job.” Last week I resigned from that six-figure income to start a business and travel to Asia for a few months with my wife (for work and pleasure.) Not to get mushy, but your podcast helped inspire me to take the risk of doing something great for myself; for my spirit. As I start this venture I’m inspiring others by blogging and broadcasting on Youtube. Young people are already responding well to my content. Every day I wake up early and KILL IT, accomplishing my tasks and giving value to others. That’s success to me. I hope my story of success inspires you. Thanks for your good intentions and high quality show. Keep it up!

“I’ve been “investing” intermittently and making big bets without taking the time to learn how to invest or trade (equities and options)…”
Feedback in:
I’ve been “investing” intermittently and making big bets without taking the time to learn how to invest or trade (equities and options). I have had good “ideas” but knew very little about risk management, trade structure, etc. I’m now in my mid-50s losing patience and too much money “buying and holding” through big price action moves on these “strong” fundamental companies. I have not taken the time to learn this skill seriously. I have decided to learn and do this full-time starting this year. I’m putting myself on a tight leash to get things moving quickly but also know there is so much to learn in order to capitalize on the opportunities that may arise in any market condition.
Trying to find the right path forward based on my personality.
Thanks,
Jean
I have never seen a trading personality test that corresponds to some particular trading strategy. That blunt? Yes.
