My guest today is Larry Hite, a hedge fund manager who is credited as one of the forefathers of system trading. He co-founded Mint Investments in 1981, which by 1990, had become the largest commodity trading advisor in the world in terms of assets under management. After forming a partnership with the Man Group in the same year, he pioneered the principal protected fund concept, leading to a number of successful structured products and financial engineering innovations.

Hello Michael,

I have not traded anything yet. I have been reading about investing for a while now. I don’t know where to start because investing, like accounting has so many different ways to invest. Each style has its own language.

But that has not stopped me from continuing to read. When I found the turtle book, I was interested because it touts about following a system. I am a very systematic person and like to have rules. I’m highly interested in learning more.

It may take me time, but I will get there. I have to work on building seed money to start my investing career.

My biggest challenge in trading is staying with a stock after it has had a large decline. Today for example, MSFT was hit badly in the market. They had an earnings report yesterday that looked ok to me, but the market apparently didn’t like it or the guidance for the following quarters. Or is the market for tech stocks declining and MSFT is caught up with that possible reversal. I don’t have a clue. On a weekly chart MSFT still looks ok, but on a daily chart it doesn’t. What to do?

My guest today is Mike Massimino, a former NASA astronaut, is a professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University and the senior advisor for space programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Mike was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1996, and is the veteran of two space flights, the fourth and fifth Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions in 2002 and 2009. Mike has a team record for the number of hours spacewalking in a single space shuttle mission, and he was also the first person to tweet from space.

The topic is his book Moonshot: A NASA Astronaut’s Guide to Achieving the Impossible.

Hello Michael,

On the second day of the new year 2022, I have started listening to your podcast (I used to download each episode I liked from your website, so I could more easily store my favorite episodes on hardware – I think you have disabled that functionality around April 2022).

I listened to almost every episode, except for the replays, audiobooks and maybe a handful of others I don’t recall now. I listened exclusively to your podcast and did so during lunch breaks, when I was in the gym or during some dinners at home. And after almost two years, I have now arrived at your most recent episode – 1241. You mentioned a couple of times how many hours it would take to listen to all your podcasts, so just wanted to share the above as an additional fun fact to you.

At the end of this, I wanted to say thank you for the content, stories, lessons, insights, experience, wisdom and motivation you and your guests have shared! There have been many moments that were just so incredibly inspirational and that without doubt, have had an enormous positive impact on my life.

Perhaps one day we will have a chance to work together more closely or meet in person. Until then – keep up the good work.
