My biggest challenge is simply the next step in my learning process. I am a complete newbie to trading and know nothing but want to start paper trading to get my feet wet. I have been looking at different trading strategies for the past several weeks (day trading, swing trading) and after listening to The Impeccable Podcast (he is a trend follower) and there was a reference to the turtles, I eventually came across you and actually just listened to a couple of your podcasts. Jerry Parker’s story was inspiring! As a former professional baseball player who loves process and the discipline required to perform according to a plan, trend following seems perfect for me and as I am learning, it has the historical data that shows it is highly successful. So that is where I am in my journey. I align with the philosophy so just seeking to learn the rules and language of this so I can start getting my reps in and practice with it. I have a pretty good method (using technical analysis). I tend to trust it too much. I sell naked puts and when one re-educates me, I keep rolling it out until it recovers. My problem is taking too large of a position. CAT, for example, took several months to get profitable. ROKU is presently giving me a problem. SI is working well. No losers yet. Deep out of the Money, short term, high IV. A recent problem seems to be early exercise.

I don’t see a consistent strategy in your description. You need:

• Exact rules for selecting your tracking portfolio.
• Exact rules for entering your trades at the right time.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a loss.
• Exact rules for exiting your trades with a profit.
• Exact rules for how much money to bet on each trade.

Larry Hite’s “don’t give a shit” freedom of both age and money is delicious. Yes, make it a regular feature checking in with this old pro. A funny question would be his take on such non-subjects as the Will Smith slap, now that would be a hoot. My God, how delicious if you could nail Charlie Munger at his raw best of don’t give a shit. With his Expiration Date coming faster and faster, we so need “Munger, Raw”. Hell, become a vault for all the old pros who no longer giving a flying Elf. Please, if you ever discover a biographer of Alan Watts, go for it. Imagine, Watts died of all things alcoholism, for starters (according to Wikipedia).

The old pros unvarnished are the best.

I’m just curious because I’m 550 episodes into the podcast and never heard you say anything about Mark Douglas. Was there a reason? He seemed to align with so much of what you talk about. I know he’s no longer with us. He was the first person I ever came across who talked about uncertainty and probability thinking. Then over hundreds of hours, you and your guests have really solidified so much of that. Was just listening to him again today and was just curious. Or have I not read and listened far enough?

Why?

I’ve been learning about trend following/swing trading for about 2 years now. Becoming increasingly frustrated with a fundamental approach, I’m trying to think through how to effectively employ trend following concepts within the framework I’m required to work within. Effectively, I can’t lean my longs more than 10% vs my shorts (and vice versa) along with other risk limits on concentration. I’m also limited to the Industrials industry (with some leeway into tech and materials). I’m thinking pair trades (viewing it like a single security) could be the way to go. I haven’t seen anyone write on or employ this trend following/market neutral approach before. I would love to hear any thoughts you might have on the approach or if you’re aware of any literature/other investors that have utilized this approach.

Go trend following. Don’t complicate it. Market neutral is not trend following.
