I’ve been following you for a number of years. I’ve really enjoyed your podcast!

I’m a Financial Solutions Advisor for Bank of America & Merrill.

My goal is to learn how to trade a Long/Short Portfolio of Stocks, Bonds, Currencies & Commodities.

I’d like to start my own firm or fund within the next few years.

I can’t seem to find anyone who can teach me a Long/Short Portfolio.

I see tons of coaches/courses for day trading. I don’t want to day trade.

My guest today is Larry Hite, a hedge fund manager who is credited as one of the forefathers of system trading. He co-founded Mint Investments in 1981, which by 1990, had become the largest commodity trading advisor in the world in terms of assets under management. After forming a partnership with the Man Group in the same year, he pioneered the principal protected fund concept, leading to a number of successful structured products and financial engineering innovations.

There are many challenges I have faced with regard to trading. The starting point would be personal discipline with regard to money management and with regard to trend trading. I find it difficult to confirm when a trend has started and then where to place my entry and stop loss.

Dear Michael,

Love your podcast. Very pragmatic and to the point.

My biggest frustration with trading at the moment is drawdown 38% from peak at the moment.

I only trade stocks. Trading 20+ years, read the book How to Make Money in Stocks in 2020 and had my first breakthrough trading the COVID rally and made 400%+ in my account, just trading 52 weeks highs and coming out at 10-day moving average as lots of high tight flags were forming like TSLA, JKS and RIOT (blockchain) and cutting loses at 7-8% per trade. Since Feb ‘21, I have suffered death by a thousand cuts and made 2 major errors. Did not short on the way down like Peleton and Zoom and did not realize the market environment had changed until I was down 30% and have traded much smaller since. Since Feb ‘21 I have had 2 winning trades out of 70. Very frustrating but with any trend following there will be drawdowns and this is how I’m taking it and trying to save what’s left of my capital for the next major uptrend. Trading extremely small at the moment to try the gauge when the next uptrend might be. Just have to be patient.

My guest today is Garrett Neiman, a serial nonprofit entrepreneur with a focus on social justice. Neiman was the founding CEO of CollegeSpring, a national college access nonprofit that was recognized by the Obama White House. He was also a co-creator of Liberation Ventures, a philanthropic fund focused on building power toward federal reparations. Currently, he serves as a Senior Fellow at Prosperity Now and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality.
